|
Quick forum search didn't return anything, so I thought I'd ask the question:
Does SST have a group participating in any distributed computing projects? If not, is there any interest?
Short version: everybody runs an application on their machine that does calculations of some sort when the machine isn't doing anything else.
Here's some info on different projects:
http://www.aspenleaf.com/distributed/distrib-projects.html
I already run Folding@Home (go team 37255!)
http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/
but would gladly join (or start) an SST team.
Any thoughts or suggestions from the masses?
Some possible issues:
- different people run different OSes
- things like this aren't allowed at work
- doesn't play soundtracks

Can you explain the purpose more? What would be a good example for SST? _________________ "Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?." -Maximus

I'm already doing some light SETI@Home work, and would gladly join up in a SST group. The group I'm in now never grew beyond the two who were already there. _________________ "Anything one man can imagine,

The purpose is just for community building, I guess. No real benefit to SST directlry (unless we join a project that pays $$ or offers a prize, I guess), sorry.
My thought was that it might be fun to, as a group, participate in something like this. (Hey, team SST is #7 today, woohoo!) Even better if we do something like F@H where we're potentially helping cure disease.
Worst case is people decide to run the application as invididuals, and whatever project they support would benefit.
There might be a way to benefit SST directly, but I haven't looked into it that far. There might be something like an SST logo on a sponsor page or some such. That would depend on the project, I guess.
Just to clarify: I get no benefit from anything that comes of this, and I only used F@H as an example because that's what I run.

Thought I'd revive this thread to see if there is any interest in starting an SST team for Folding@Home, or if someone wanted to start one for another project (or both).
Obviously there was no interest before, but we've got some new faces around that might be interested.
Read the thread for more info.

For those interrested I've made a SST-group with SETI@home called "StreamingSoundtracks.com" (without the quotes, of course). Do join up if you're already donating your CPU to that cause.

So I followed Chandlers example and started an SST team for Folding@Home. Now you can help cure diseases and kick the tar out of the SETI folks...er....I mean have a friendly competition.
The StreamingSoundtracks.com team is # 41159
and the homepage is here
Come and join the fun!
Highlights of F@H:
-Windows and UNIX clients
-Help in the fight against Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, and Parkinson's disease
-Translations for Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish

Thanks for reviving this thread j2brown. I'm now running Folding@home in the SST group. As for the SETI@home project, I would run it, but it'll only run when you're away, and as a screensaver. I kind of like the screensaver I already have from Adult Swim. (And as a side note the SETI project would probably be more efficient if it were a background program like Folding.) _________________ It's like something out of that twilighty show about that zone. - Homer Simpson

Looks like I broke the linked page. It stopped featuring SST. Hopefully that's fixed now.
Thanks for the support Diamondback.
Based on my observations from my previous "team"
(me and somebody I don't know. He must have put in the wrong team number.)
it takes a while to complete a "work unit" so there won't be anything on the page for a bit.

Looks like Diamondback posted the first work units to the SST Team for Folding@Home. Good job!
Has anybody else joined either of the teams yet?
FYI: When you check out a work unit it's not considered overdue for 6 weeks. That should give
some insight as to how long it might take.

My slow test servers finally completed their first work unit. Woohoo. That and the 11 Diamondback has completed (must have much faster computer than mine) puts the SST team rank at:
7287 of 35023
Yea! We're in the 4 digits! Thanks Diamondback.

Yeah, it helps that I was able to save up enough to get a beefed up system that a friend helped me to assemble (much better than a preassembled system) over the summer. Now all I have to do is save for a better monitor (though I'm doing quite fine with the one I have seeing as with my new computer, I can actually get much better resolution). _________________ It's like something out of that twilighty show about that zone. - Homer Simpson
