I think they're great, but that's probably because I haven't got a clue how you make them!

Animated avatars are soooo lame! Wait... eh, never mind. Laughing

Was my RTFM-guy cooler?

I'm not a big fan of animated avatars myself; haven't seen many that aren't either tacky or distracting or just plain gaudy. I also find that the more there are on the page, the more annoying they get. In fact, I was rather relieved when I saw so few on the SST Forums in the first place. Most boards are littered with them (both as an avatar *and* as part of the signature line) and I find it all just so much visual clutter.

Increasingly, there are also animated GIFs out there featuring little snippets of scenes from films/TV. These can be cute, but the file sizes are usually high (resulting in slower page loads) and quite often people are hotlinking the image from someone else's site (which is both unfair and potentially embarassing as the person hosting the image may change it to something less savoury).

That said, if people want to use animated GIFs for their avatars, that's their prerogative.

I voted "Depends on the avatar".

Flags are cool, and I really like Tiggerer2's avatar.

Certainly agree that some could be annoying and those movie ones are hard when you are on with only a 56k modem (and streaming too).

I voted "depends on the avatar" as well. But most of the ones that I've seen around here are great.

animated avatars can be cool, but cant be cool when they move fast or use annoying colors or distract too much

I voted "depends" I like sensei's flage. It's the only one i have seen here so far. But i guess if there were too many it would take forever to load a page.

Well, let's just see which avatars in the SST Gallery are animated:

Of these, only the swirly-eyed anime is to my taste.

I like the tigger one and that's about it. And I think filmgoerjuan has way too much free time.
