Here's an idea. What about having more smilies. I'm suggesting this because on occassion I have wanted to use a smiley that wasn't available. The ones I'm thinking of are one for DUH, one for D'OH, a YAWN, and maybe just for kicks that smiley you get when you die in Minesweeper. Oh yeah, could you also edit it so that smilies will also work in polls.
As a side note, Christmas accentuates the bucktoothedness of this smiley. _________________ It's like something out of that twilighty show about that zone. - Homer Simpson

Why not write what you wish to express instead of having more smilies? I'm just asking... _________________ Always wondered what a French photo album could look like?

well b/c sometimes it's easier to have a sarcastic emoticon then having to say - i meant that sarcastically btw _________________ 'He looked at her, and being a man whom pity deeply stirred, it seemed to him that her loveliness amid her grief would pierce his heart.' —Faramir's thoughts on Éowyn |

I use smilies begrudgingly, but I think the ones we have are sufficient. Moving beyond the standard ones will just cause confusion or require people to look up the smiley in some sort of key. And really, haven't we moved beyond the need for a hieroglyphic based language?
That said, I lay claim to sole use of this smiley (because I'm a total mack daddy)
P.S. I meant that sarcastically, btw
P.P.S. Yeah, thuring, you're right, that is kind of a pain to have to say |

Actually the only one i was really thinking we needed to add was the vomit one jeric used in the forums. - and some type of sarcastic one.
Of course we're all going on the assumption that DB read the FAQ and knows that there is a link to click to access more than what's at the top of chat. _________________ 'He looked at her, and being a man whom pity deeply stirred, it seemed to him that her loveliness amid her grief would pierce his heart.' —Faramir's thoughts on Éowyn |

Well, it was just an idea. And yes I have read about the FAQ (I already knew about that link before I read the FAQ, it's in plain site). It's just that sometimes it's a little funnier to see a smiley than to type the words for it, something about visual vs. words for me. But no, I don't want us to have thousands of smilies, like those pop-ups say we should. _________________ It's like something out of that twilighty show about that zone. - Homer Simpson

We have enough smilies.
That being said, I disagree with Juan.
In written text, tone can sometimes be difficult to imply. For the chatboard and forums, smilies solve this problem.
Screenplays do it with parantheticals. |

but that was my point, I don't want to do it w/ parantheticals, but like i said, we have enough, maybe only need one or two more _________________ 'He looked at her, and being a man whom pity deeply stirred, it seemed to him that her loveliness amid her grief would pierce his heart.' —Faramir's thoughts on Éowyn |

Caray, we do not really have the equivalent in French actually. Duh is borrowed from the Simpsons. It's a way of saying "of course" but in a very sarcastic way. The French equivalent would be something like "Ben evidemment" or "Ben ouais hein". The "D'oh" one, I have never heard it so I don't know. _________________ Always wondered what a French photo album could look like?

I agree that tone can sometimes be difficult to imply; in fact, this is why I (over)use smilies. My point wasn't meant to disparage the use of smilies as a form of shorthand or for conveying tone. Rather, it's that creating smilies outside those already in common use and generally understood (or readily understandable at a glance) is problematic. It should be done, if at all, sparingly.

strike that, reverse it...
D'oh is the saying borrowed from the Simpsons. As a favorite saying of Homer Simpson it means "I can't believe I just did that!"
Duh is either what "stupid" people say or that something is so obvious that the "stupid" people would immediately understand.

Alright, alright. I get the drift. You're not going to add anymore smilies to the site (or at least not anytime soon). (BTW I did notice that I overlooked the dead emoticon.) That's fine. After seeing where Caliburn got his (that chearleader is funny) and Jeric got his vomiticon, I can use even more than just what's on this site. So there! _________________ It's like something out of that twilighty show about that zone. - Homer Simpson
