I've had this problem for a while, but always assumed that it was operator error. I've run out of ideas, so I'll post my problem here and see who can help.

Whenever I visit the forums (not so much, lately) it always marks everything as read when I leave the site. Is this normal behavior? I'd like to be able to hit some of the posts and leave the rest for later, but when I return only new post are marked as unread, not the old ones which should be unread.

My thought are that this is A) Operator error (perhaps misunderstanding what should really happen, or B) A Firefox/cookie issue of some sort.

I use Firefox, but I see this behavior in Linux and Windows both. I haven't done extensive testing, so if you have specific scenarios/questions let me know and I'll get to them when I have a chance.

Any thoughts from the brain trust at SST?

I have the same problem also, j2brown, so you're not alone. I ended up just looking under each section in the forums at the date-stamp to give me a rough idea which ones I might have missed or wanted to look at again. It would be nice to know if there's a quick fix - if not, I'll just keep on doing what I currently do.

that is how phpbb works. The posts will be automitically marked as read after an hour. Lots of phpforums doesnt have the "mark all as read" link. So that is how phpbb handles it.

Just as a tip, whenever I visit the forums I only click "view posts since last visit" then I hold down CTRL-SHIFT and click each one. That opens each thread in a Firefox tab in the background. Also keep in mind the reading a PM will count as viewing the forums.

Thanks Cal & JERIC. JERIC, that's what I've started to do. Also, thanks for the tip re: PM viewing.
