I happen to agree that when Horner transitioned to the dramatic and romantic stylings of late (starting in the mid-90s with Apollo 13 and Titanic) he left his best work behind him.
Some of my favorite cues:
Battle in the Mutara Nebula and Genesis Countdown from Star Trek II. From my favorite score, I go back and forth about which one of these tracks is my favorite.
Preparations for Battle from Glory and Ride of the Firemares from Krull are fantastic cues. |

All the Trek 2 cues mentioned without my favorite from Trek 3: Stealing the Enterprise. Some great development of the fantastic Trek 2 material, and some insanely high horn cues make this a track not to be missed! _________________ Theremin - yes. Waterphone - no! |

Nice to see Pagemaster mentioned, Tomi!
I'd add "Meeting Adventure and Fantasy" from that score. |

OK, these would be four that would make my Horner collection:
Field Of Dreams - The Place Where Dreams Come True
The Land Before Time - The Great Migration (one of the best opening cues I have heard on any soundtrack)
Balto - Heritage Of The Wolf
Searching For Bobby Fischer - Epilogue/End Titles (my favourite Horner ST) |

Legends of the Fall (err, all?):
The Wedding
Goodbyes
The Changing Seasons, Wild Horses & Tristan's Return
Caspar:
One Last Wish
Caspar's Lullaby-Caspar
Troy:
Briseis & Achilles
Mighty Joe Young:
Dedication & Windsong
I'm more romantic, but pre-Titanic Horner. _________________ "The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection." ~Michaelangelo

Well, after getting an A on my Horner paper (YaY!), I have listened to quite a lot of his stuff. Currently, I am obsessed with "The Ludlows" from Legends of the Fall. It's so gorgeous! I also agree with theSnowLeopard on Land Before Time. I also really enjoy "The Launch" from Apollo 13, and opening credits from The Rocketeer, and pretty much everything from Glory. One of my other favs is "The Sinking" from Titanic. There are too many more to add right now, so I'll stop rambling _________________ The journey of one thousand miles begins with a single step. |

Excellent idea for a thread, Luther_III. I'm afraid that I'm not as organized as most of you to be able to rattle off 20 pieces with their title and the CD they are on, so I'll just throw mine on here as I think of them. Or better yet as I hear them on SST.
Many good tracks are listed so I won't be redundant, but I will mention Mutara Nebula from Wrath of Kahn and Launch from Apollo 13. Twopop said it already, goosebumps for sure. Not listed yet I would include;
From Braveheart, Sons of Scotland and Murron's Burial.
From Glory, The year of Jubilee.
Rocketeer, Main Title, Take Off,
and Leaving Port from Titanic.
Horner is genius as far as I'm concerned, and I don't care if he "borrows" from himself from time to time.
Good times SST, late. |

I'll add my favorites that haven't been mentioned before:
-Battle Beyond The Stars - The Battle Begins (If you like "stealing the enterprise you'll like this)
-The Main Title from "Red Heat" is also very nice. _________________ Spotify Playlist Film Score |

Didn't know where to put this, but thought it was interesting from ENEWS:
"CBS hiring James Horner, the composer of the Titanic theme song, to write new theme music for the Katie Couric-helmed CBS Evening News. How bitter is Dan Rather right now? " |

I heard this also i think that's pretty cool and you know John Williams made the NBC Nightly News theme. |

Well, it looks like I'll now have a reason to watch the CBS Evening News. Goodness knows it's not because of Katie.... _________________ "If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. To this very old thread I would like to add "Opening Credits - The Processional" from House of Cards. I was not familiar with this movie/soundtrack at all until calaador requested this track just now.
It was a very nice piece of music that makes me want to rent the movie...

An old bump it seems to an old thread:
I've heard a track or two from the album mentioned in the first post. I'm surprised that Casper's Lullaby was not in the album...certainly a favorite cue among Horner fans, myself included. Also nothing from Balto...greatly underrated. The wolf theme from that film is very majestic. Horner was overlooked for a lot of his animated music scores. |
