Okay, in honor of Veteran's Day (or whatever your country calls today), please tell us if you have ever served your military. But, PLEASE, do not turn this into a "branches-war".
After enough people chime in, I'll update this first message so it is easier to see everyone.
I'll start:

I too have never served in the armed forces (so I hesitate to even post in this thread), but I have gone to war with them. No forum post can properly express the awe I have for those who are willing to make the sacrifices involved in serving their country in the armed forces.
Of course I need to offer a special thanks to the men and women of the USAF who tolerated a civilian like me tagging along and kept me safe for those many months.

took me awhile to find my command's and unit/flight patches... but here they are:
At some point, we became part of SAC:
In Italy:
Our Base's Electronic Security Group (ESG) patch:
My flight (Zulu) patch:
In Hawaii:
odd... I don't have any patches from Hawaii, nor can I find them online... oh well, the beaches were nice _________________ "insert your own clever quote here.... I'm too lazy to do it."

I have also never served in the armed forces, but have many friends and relatives who have and still serve. I would like to thank you so much for your life, time and service that you have given for America's freedom. I would like to second j2brown's comment that no post or forum of any kind can or ever will show how greatful we are for your service and love that you have shown for us.
A srong and heartfelt THANK YOU!!!! _________________ arioch

I served in the Texas Army National Guard as a combat engineer (demolitions and land mines) from 1994-2002. My unit was Det. 1 Co. A 111th Engineer Battalion 49th Armored Div. and I salute anyone who served...anytime.

Here are some more pictures of my Italy tour. The Hawaiian tour was pretty generic (stayed on an army base, worked deep inside a NORAD type mountain enclosure, equipment was all in Thailand, etc.). The Italy tour is always my first memory of when I served. It seemed more like the real thing.
My job was to copy morse code from other countries from as far away as a 1/4 way around the world. To do that, we had to use this antenae - the FLR-9 (nicknamed the Elephant Cage due to it's size):
(click picture for larger view)
The Italians would come and inspect it once a year to make sure we weren't hiding any missles in those thick posts - LOL! _________________ "insert your own clever quote here.... I'm too lazy to do it." |

Cool thread Tjoe I served in 03-04, first at the Garrison In South-Varanger (GSV) next to the norwegian-russian border, and later at Skjold (meaning "Shield") a bit further south. At GSV it was all "jäger" service meaning week-long missions in the bush, watching without being seen At Skjold I served in a special-armor troop in the armored engineering company. My task was to man a .50 cal machinegun and operate a MICLIC-system on a tracked all-terrain vehicle. (MICLIC = Mine Clearing Line Charge, it is basically a rocket attached to a 100m long line of 830kg C4. ) Whenever the tanks encounter a mine field we drive up, fire the rocket and blow the C4, creating a 100m long crater where the tanks can drive safely. It's a pretty big boom.
Some pics (Click to enlarge):
Patches: 1:GSV 2:Armored Engineering Company
1:Out on some training mission close to the russian border.
1:BV206 Tracked all-terrain vehicle 2:The rocket in the back 3:Huge crater
I got to experience a lot of fun an challanging stuff in my service and I wouldn't change a thing in it. _________________ Who is General Failure and why is he reading my disk? |
