I am a long time listener and donator of SST. The day the Ogg Streams were canceled I reduced donations though. The newly setup Ogg streams are slow and broken and no longer an option. I have to say that MP3 64kbit is not the best choice for soundtracks. They sound too compressed and muddy. So what do you guys think about a monthly subscription of about $5-$10 for higher quality bitrates?

I'm not too interested in high bitrate streams. aacPlus non-Live365 and mp3PRO Live365 will be the future. However, I do have plans to implement WMA streams of probably 128k and 32k. Some other things need to be worked out first in order for that to happen though.
Ogg works good here too.

I have the same problem as philk. Here (in France) the 64k ogg stream is often (but not always) completely inaudible. The problem seem to appear on every track change: when the next track begins, it keeps buffering and never start to play again.
I don't think it cames from my side because i have more bandwidth than enough and tried with several players.
It is strange the issue only appears for some of us... Maybe it comes from how far we are from the server ?

ogg runs fine with absolutly no problems. If you experience problems with ogg it is at your end.
To me 128kbps is a waste of bandwith. You do not gain much quality increase than MP3pro.
We can spend our resources better getting more listeners than providing 128 kbps to a limited number of users with all the administration involved. |

uhmmm folks... 128kb is a great difference to 64k-mp3pro. Not with your average pc-speakers maybe. But with headsets and semi-pro loudspeakers the lack of clarity is very audible.
So when 128kb mp3 even on subscription are out of question how much has the aacPlus or WMA 128kbit progressed so far? |

Not much philk. Still waiting on SpacialAudio. aacPlus was due Dec05, then pushed to Feb06. No word yet. WMA can't happen until a bug is fixed on 64bit OSes.

The difference with moving up to 128kbit is indeed audiable, at least if you have a good soundcard, good amps, good speakers, etc.
You could even make it an optional extra, only available to VIP's, costing 5$ extra/month ? |

I've been thinking about that lately. It's a possibility.

Just joined and love this place. The 64k ogg stream works fine for me using foobar 0.9.1 If I really was going to whine about the sound, I'd have gone and bought the albums and ripped in FLAC. Ogg at 64kbps sounds pretty darn good considering how small the filesize is. ^^ |

I have never had any sound probs, though I don't actually know what player I am using. Does anyone know what player i-tunes uses?
Streaming Soundtracks appears in the eclectic folder of the radio list... I just double click it and off it goes... (sometimes with no advert first)
