HANNA
A girl is raised alone by her father in the woods to be a deadly fighter. They're both being hunted by Cate Blanchett in Scully hair. Fairy tale motifs about, but damned if I know what any of them mean in this context.
I don't know if this movie was good or not. All I know is that I am sick and tired of watching movies where people get killed. I've lost my taste for it, if ever I had it. I'm tired of watching children get hurt and people take horrific injuries and I'm just tired of all of it. No one's forcing me to watch this, I know. And there's worse stuff out there. But anyway, I'm out.

DE EETCLUB
Average dutch thriller from successful author Saskia Noort. Music by Steve Willaert
WHITE HOUSE DOWN:
Emmerich is destroying famous buildings again in combo with a daddy-saves-the-world against a complete army. Well if you like that....
Music was only supporting and made by Thomas Wanker/Harold Kloser. 5.5/10
JEUNE ET JOLIE
The new film by François Ozon. I was already a big fan of his work (Swimming Pool, Potiche) but otherwise I became one after this coming-of-age portrait of a teenager who starts as callgirl
Keeps hanging in your head.
8/10 Music as always by Philippe Rombi but more important are the lyrics of Françoise Hardy songs that reflect Leá's thoughts.

This week:
After seeing the clip Trevor Morris scored live in Krakow I'd become interested.
Netflix had it on their list:
IMMORTALS
Below average greek mythology picture about Theseus and the gods fight King Hyperion.
Lousy production made it look very dumb and sfx had to fix that.
Trevor's music fitted the movie well on ways of portraying all characters and actionthemes and fortunately can stand on it's own.

GRAVITY IMAX 3-D
A lot of buzz around this movie (and score) but it sure was an entertaining movie, especially when seen in IMAX 3-D.
Director Cuarón had only two lead characters to focus on and did a good job even with all the necessary Sfx that come with a disastermovie like this. \0/ for having no explosions in space!!
Funfact: Ed Harris did the voice of 'Houston' again as he did in 'Apollo 13' the previous famous rescue in space picture.

LA VIE D'ADELE (CHAPTERS 1&2)
Winner of the Golden Palm in Cannes this year and absolutely deserved. It makes you wonder if it's even acted, the way the two lead actresses portray Emma and Adele, two adolescents who fall in love with each other, their lesbian relationship adding to all the confusing and doubts that come with their age. Almost 3 hours you're close to the skin of the girls effectively making you 'feel' their drama and passion.
9/10 If it wasn't for the moral issue it easily would win an Oscar
JESUS LIEBT MICH
Romantic comedy from Germany. Wanted to see it because of the great score Barsotti wrote for it. Nice sitcom elements when Jesus ends up meeting nowadays people

First day of my weekend after the long workweek incl. the Gent Festival.
RUNNER RUNNER
Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck do a pretty good job of acting in this thriller that plays behind the scenes of online gaming. Score by Christophe Beck melts well with local sounding source music.

ABOUT TIME
From the writer of 'Notting Hill' and 'Four weddings and a funeral' comes this British romantic comedy with a great Bill Nighy portraying a father who explains the son (D.Gleeson) the family secret of being able to go back in time. But life doesn't want to be controlled as he would like, especially when using the talent to get the girl of his dreams.
Score by Nick Laird-Cowes. 6.5/10
DON JON
Joseph Gordon-Levitt probably wanted to fill the gap there was in US movies about sex. So he wrote, directed and starred in this vehicle where he explains (merely with voice-over) that men like porn. Too short-cut editing of the pornsite shots makes it unpleasant to look at and the father (Tony Danza) is overacting too much. Not convincing, especially when you make a movie about sex and then let actors do it with clothes on under sheets.
Daring but Disappointing! Let European moviemakers handle this subject.

Another movieday on my first day of the weekend (tuesday that is)
FEUTEN;HET FEESTJE
Dutch movie based on Project X.
(Feuten= Nickname for 1st years registrations in a student corps)
Registration party of the Mercurius Corps ends up in total chaos when an overheated cop ignites the fuel by wanting to shut down the party.
New actors and director, but did quite a good job in fact.

IO E TE
The new Bernardo Bertolucci movie. Movie carried by two young actors who portray two adolescents craving for acceptation, who are half-brother and sister. Bertolucci masterful directing makes the weird setting (basement) and the rehab of the girl trustworthy.
Franco Piersanti (!) scored and the music from the headphones of the guy is important for the lyrics too. (Mogol's version of Bowie's Space Oddity is briljant and a key scene in the movie)
Having read "interview with a vampire" is a plus

BAD GRANDPA
Jackass's Jimmy Knoxville solos in this movie based (read stolen?) from the popular European series Benidorm Bastards.
Where the original series excels in witty situations and believable acting, this turns to overdone behaviour and sick jokes on farts and genitals
Only for the die hard fans.

And I picked up "9" on Netflix when I came home from work yesterday.
A Tim Burton produced (obviously) animated story about rag dolls who survived a revolt by machines against the humans.
In a setting where you'd expect Wall-E to show up, the chosen-one hero
doll #9fights a battle between good and evil.
Scifi with a high fantasy level but meh entertaining.

Jeez, Dutch, reading your review of Bad Grandpa, among others, it makes me wonder why you watch American movies anymore. You don't seem to like any of them.
Anyway, last night my husband and I got a sitter and saw Thor: The Dark World. Or as we prefer to say it,
THOR!!!!!
The Dark World.
Wow, it was boring. Boring, boring, boring! The reviewer on rogerebert.com got it right, the characters are more interesting than anything that happens to them. I don't know that I'd go that far. But everything in the movie felt like something I've seen before. The bad guy was just like Nero in Star Trek. The glowing liquid ball of evil was like every other glowing CGI ball of evil from the last ten years. The scientist characters were as dumb as ever. The female characters had nothing to do but suck and die. The story didn't even try to use what it had.
And the score! Halfway through I started humming Children of Dune, because that's what it sounded like. Turns out, Brian Tyler scored this, too, which makes me think they hired him to ape a temp track.
I give up. I don't know what movies to see anymore. I guess I'll just have to enjoy Legend of Korra while it's on.

Sometimes I wonder myself as well. But in the large amount of rubbish sometimes there are movies worth seeing.
But most 'blockbusters' are IMO not part of those.
I guess your review of Thor says something in the same direction.
I have the possibility to watch movies limitless for a small amount and since I have always admired watching movies in general, I still absorb a lot, indeed.
In general there are also a lot of European movies that can be thrown on the scrapheap IMO, but when it comes to comedy and storytelling about 'difficult' subjects directors are not as reserved or shallow in their way of working the script or story.
For all it's worth, European hunour is defintely different than US's although I couldn't pinpoint the reason.
But hanging out rubber oversized testicles may be hilarious over there, here it's considered dumb entertainment (at least with the more-or-less educated viewers)
I'll give another example of review for a Netflix movie I picked up for the only reason that Luc Besson (Leon,Fifth Element) has co-written the script and produced the movie.
COLOMBIANA:
Young girl who sees her parents killed by druglord
grows up to become top assassin, for revenge only.
Due to the Besson actionscenes it gives a hint to 'León' but the movie is more predictable .
Score by Nathaniel Méchany (Taken, the Grandmaster) is surprisingly not actiondriven but also not high standing.

P.s. Thor;the dark world was already off from my
list of movies I would like to give it a chance.

(How unfortunate this post was: I actually am going to the european premiere night of Hunger Games 2  )
I hope there will be more Indie movies from the USA available on Netflix for me.

Another viewing day got me:
THE WORLD'S END
Adding to Last_Starfighter's review on the previous page I would state I thought it was a briliiant movie.
Apart from the witty British humour dialogue it got the weird elements you can also find in "MARS ATTACKS" and "SHAUN OF THE DEAD' (latter by same producer)
It tells the story of Gary King who has been stuck in the '80's who wants his old pals to let go of their bourgeois life and family just to finish a drinking tour they had in their adolescence. For the good observer there is a deeper layer in this movie which critisizes the idea that modern technology is always good and the teens of nowadays being empty-headed. (Couldn't agree more on this) and it questions freedom opposite choosing for a settled life with a family
This made it for me 8.5/10
Score by Steven Price ('Gravity') and source music for the lyrics.
DIANA
Fair try to portray such a well-known legendary figure by Naomi Watts.
Story focuses on the lesser known part of her short life, the relationship she wanted to start with the Pakistani heart surgeon Khan. This made it interesting as many don't know that part of the Princess of Wales' life.
Costumes and Hairdo did an impossible job and should get an Oscar for it.
Score by David Holmes was merely supporting I'm afraid.

DE NIEUWE WILDERNIS
Dutch highly acclaimed nature documentary about a relatively young Nature resort which developed after reclaiming land on the former inner sea, called Zuiderzee. 2 years of continuous effort pays off and it sets this movie amongst the other great nature movies that are now so popular.

THE HUNGER GAMES NIGHT:
Starting with the first movie and just after midnight the sequel Hunger Games; catching fire .
Having read the book I was at first reluctant to go watch but a cheap ticket for this premier had me taking Gf along to watch both.
First movie stayed relatively close to the book what gave it an OK entertaining feel if you take regard of all the inevatibilities it brings. Not an overpaced actionpack, but more time for the characters.
Helas, what I already was afraid for having read reviews of the second book this went all overboard in the sequel. My old rant is again valid and the movie goes to the special effects part asap.
It is only an inbetweener to even more bloodshedding action in the upcoming third movie.
Hence this movie contained many movie mistakes as well what made it even more unbelievable.
Score was OK in both, but a bit darker in HG;CF by James Newton Howard.

latest François Ozon movie. '70's/'80's styled family drama around an umbrella factory. Philippe Rombi scoring 5.5/10
THERE WILL BE BLOOD
Award winning/nominated movie by Anderson with splendid Daniel Day-Lewis in lead role of an oiltycoon who goes all the way to reach his target.
7.5/10 Score by Johnny Greenwood is average but with some nice tracks
ARN-TEMPELRIDDAREN
Scandinavian co-production based on historical facts and the TV series before it. Young nobelman is forced to become Templar knight to retrieve his loved one. Beautiful score by Tuomas Kantelinen
Movie itself is interesting but sometimes slow and shallow.

I always wondered how dutch manages to see so many movies. I see also that There Will Be Blood earned his highest rating. 
I haven't seen much lately. I did watch Vamps a while ago. It's a comedy by director Amy Heckerling, who directed Clueless and reunites her with stars Alicia Silverstone and Wallace Shawn. It's about a pair of vampires, one of them almost 200 years old, coping with modern life in New York. It's a comedy, but it's not very funny. At least, not consistently. But there were some parts I did find funny, and it's nice to see vampires not taken deadly seriously for a change.
Despite myself, I found the ending really affecting. Got something in my eye around the same time. |
