Lies has created some buzz in the Forum with her topic on Snakes On A Plane. Now that the movie has opened, let's place this movie in some perspective by comparing others in the same genre over the last 25 years.
I have created a poll of the best reviewed horror/comedies. What is interesting is that 9 of the 18 here are from the 1980's. (Hmm...what does that tell about that decade?  )
See at the bottom for a full list of the movies that I could find in this genre.
Balancing two genres in one movie is always tricky. Movies like Arachnhobia and The Frighteners just aren't horrifying enough. Re-Animator and the Evil Dead movies are too horrible (and gory). So I'll vote for Tremors, followed closely by special honors for Shaun of The Dead and Fright Night.

I'd pick following (without balancing their value):
-) Gremlins 1 & 2
-) Shaun Of The Dead (which by the way is from 2004, NOT 1987  )
-) Army of Darkness
-) The Frighteners
-) Scary Movie 1,3
-) Eight Legged Freaks
-) Tremors
I haven't seen all movies on your list, so I can't tell which are too cheesy or too gory for being real funny... |

I'm voting for Arachnophobia. That's a hilarious movie! But with a close second, Shawn of the Dead and finishing third with Gremlins.
There are so many on that list that are great comedies, it's hard to pick. Nice thread idea!

Wow! So many to choose from. I went with Army of Darkness, because it still makes me laugh out loud, is very quotable, and is short enough to watch on a school night.
But Little Shop of Horrors is wonderful! With how many horror movies can you sing along? And such good songs. Though someone is making a musical out of Evil Dead. I think LSOH has nothing to worry about.
Fright Night is also a neat little movie. Prince Humperdinck makes a suave vampire, and the in-jokes for fans of B-horror are great. |

Although I probably should choose Army of Darkness because it's the most parodied parody on the list, I have to go with Tremors because I've seen it about 1000 times! To this day I can't look at a big rock without thinking "residual boulders". Man I love that flick!! |

One of my very faves is Peter Jackson's Dead Alive (or Braindead as it is known in NZ), which may well be the grossest/goriest film of all time, and still manages to be sweet-natured and really funny in its own wacky way.
This is light years away from PJ's LOTR but if you keep your eyes open, you can catch lot of references to his works (the pic opens in Skull Island, no less). It also sports a fun Pete Dasent synth score.
If you have a strong stomach and don't mind tons of blood and other bodily fluids, it comes highly recommended.

I decided to go with the movie, Shaun of the Dead. My expectations were very low going into the movie because it did not look all that appealing. In the end, this movie was great. I highly recommend this movie! Since watching it, I have watched it in bits and pieces when it comes on the movie channels and every time it is just as good.
Lots of great humor, great dialogue, great movie! |
