We’ve been invited to interview composer ALEX WURMAN, whose score to Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby helped the film rev to #1 this weekend. The movie is about #1 NASCAR driver Ricky Bobby and stars Will Ferrell.
Talledega Nights reteams Wurman with director Adam McKay, with whom he collaborated on another Will Ferrell box-office hit, Anchorman - The Legend of Ron Burgundy.
Between the ballad and the legend, Wurman provided the score to Warner Independent's National Geographic Film March of the Penguins, helping this film without dialog take the Oscar last year for Best Documentary Feature.
This is a great opportunity for us to get to know more about this wonderful, diverse composer, and welcome him to SST. Need some inspiration? Take a look at Wurman’s official web site here.

Twopop I am DEFINITELY interested just not had an opportunity quite yet to formulate some questions. I would really like to hear some of Wurman's comments especially after hearing his film music radio interview. Keep up the great work Twopop!
Alright here are my questions:
At what point did you know you wanted to be a composer?
Which one of your projects was the most rewarding? Why?
Which one of your projects was the most challenging? Why?
How did you first get involved in film scoring?
How did you become involved on the March of the Penguins project?
When composing music, do you approach a Documentary any differently than a Movie?
Has the success of March of the Penguins helped you gain more exposure and increase your opportunities for new projects?
Who are the composers you admire? Why?
Is there a specific genre of films you enjoy scoring the most?
Have you ever had second thoughts about becoming a composer?
What is the hardest part of being a composer?
What are some of your upcoming projects?

When did you first realize that you wanted to become a composer?
Could you talk a little bit about your background as a jazz pianist? How do you think it informs your work?
I thought the March of the Penguins score was fantastic because it made it easy for people of all ages to identify with the penguins and imagine them having an emotional inner life. What were some of your inspirations while you were composing this score?
After collaborating with Adam McKay on Anchorman, what was it like to work with him again on Talladega Nights?
What were some of the challenges that you faced when scoring a Nascar comedy like Talladega Nights?
What gave you the idea to add a western type influence to Talladega Nights? Were you listening to particular western scores?
What's your work process like? Do you sketch ideas on paper first or do you compose using a computer?
Are there any of your own scores that you wish you could have a full score CD release?
What did you wish you knew more about before you got into the film scoring business?
How do you think you've grown as a composer?
What are some of your favorite scores?
If you could go back in time and choose an era to compose in, which time period would you choose? Would you choose a time when jazz was more popular in film or some other period?

how do you come up with fitting scores to a comedy?

Alright I have edited my original post to include some questions. Unfortunately I did not get a ton of time to do a little research to asked more specific questions so some are a bit general. I really look forward to hearing some of Mr Wurman's responses as the radio interview I heard of him a few months back was rather interesting. |
