The Black Dahlia has opened to bad reviews and poor box office after not seeing a DePalma movie on our screens for four years. A pity, because he is one of the great visual stylists of the last 40 years. Renowned for his bravura set pieces involving dazzling camerawork and choreography, the most famous probably being the railway station steps sequence in The Untouchables, all of his movies are worth watching for these moments alone. You can never accuse DePalma of making a boring movie.

My favourite film would be Carlito's Way (I love the extraordinary scene which ends with the bullets in the trash can), following closely by The Untouchables, Dressed To Kill and Blow Out.

Here is the list of his movies, with the box office result and critics rating from Rotten Tomatoes:
  1. 2006 The Black Dahlia $10.0 34%
  2. 2002 Femme Fatale $6.6 49%
  3. 2000 Mission To Mars $60.0 24%
  4. 1998 Snake Eyes $55.9 33%
  5. 1996 Mission Impossible $180.9 67%

  6. 1996 Carlito's Way $36.9 81%
  7. 1992 Raising Cain $21.3 47%
  8. 1990 Bonfire Of The Vanities $21.3 23%
  9. 1989 Casualities Of War $18.6 85%
  10. 1987 The Untouchables $76.2 83%

  11. 1986 Wise Guys $8.8 31%
  12. 1984 Body Double $8.8 79%
  13. 1983 Scarface $45.4 89%
  14. 1981 Blow Out $12.0 91%
  15. 1980 Dressed To Kill $31.8 86%

  16. 1978 The Fury $NA 76%
  17. 1976 Carrie $33.8 89%
  18. 1976 Obsession $NA 79%
  19. 1974 Phantom Of The Paradise $NA 100%
  20. 1973 Sisters $NA 94%

What is your favourite DePalma Movie? Is there a particular signature DePalma sequence that you admire? Let us know! Razz

The Untouchables, for me. Saw it when it was released, I really liked it as a teen Smile

I saw one trailer from Black Dahlia and found it interesting. I might see it when it's released in France. Did you like the movie, Snow?

The Untouchables!

I don't know too many films of Brian de Palma.
I've seen Femme Fatale, which was okay.
Mission To Mars was... well, it was at least something. Confused
Snake Eyes & Mission Impossible were also alright.
I'm curious how the BLACK DAHLIA will turn out.

Respect for that well worked list, Snow! Wink

I have to agree with bpewien and Alchemist, the Untouchables is my favourite,a great film, with an excelent Sean Connery
I also liked Snake eyes when I saw it, but now, I can´t remember much about the film, maybe I need to see it again.
And I´ve to confess that I haven´t seen Carrie Surprised

Very good post snow!

It hasn't been released in Australia, yet. We're always one of the last markets to get a film release. Hopefully someone here will give us a heads up as to it's quality.

Here is a cool website to learn more about DePalma's movies.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. Smile

I have nothing to add about De Palma, but just want to say to SnowLeopard: Your forum topics and layout design are absolutely outstanding!

Thank you so much! Smile

I thought Blow Out was fantastic - made me think about the characters long after I'd seen it. I also enjoyed Mission to Mars for its hopeful tone despite the bad judgment of the astronauts and the messed-up science. The Untouchables, Carrie, and Scarface were excellent too, but I probably wouldn't rewatch them. I have a lot of catching up to do on DePalma films!

As I have only seen (in full length) Scarface and Casualties of War (I also own them on DVD), I had to choose Scarface. Just love the performance by Al Pacino.

I also like the Scarface soundtrack (which sadly isn't here, but I do know why). My favourite scene is where "Push It To The Limit" rings out and the whole montage with the music.

Pros to South Park for using "Push..." in a montage (episode Up The Down Steroid.) Smile.

Thanks for the list, snow. I thought I had only seen one of his movies, turns out I've seen three.

Of those three, my favorite is Carrie. It's a simple story, told well. And if you stop the DVD (or change the channel) at just the right time, it even has a happy ending, where Carrie is accepted, and happy, and the pig blood contraption doesn't work.

Phantom of the Paradise is weirder, more creative. I don't know if that makes it a better movie. The third film I've seen is Mission Impossible, which I could take or leave.

I have not seen very many films by DePalma it would appear. Of the ones I have seen I would have to say my favorites are The Untouchables and Scarface. I have always been interested in movies dealing with mobsters so both these movies I thought were well done and enjoyable!
