Well LOTRking, your title is a bit confusing since you are actually mentioning you 'favorite' not necessarily the 'top' soundtracks of 2006. I would recommend a change to the title. Also, I would not consider EPICON a soundtrack, but that may be just me being a bit too technical.

I plan on contributing to this thread (prolly with my top 10 since that is how I usually do it) but there are still several new release in December I would like to hear before I make my list of favorites.

NateDogg - I have changed the name. As for EPICON, it was picked as SST's Soundtrack of the month a few months back, so I figure if the admins call it a soundtrack, I can too... Razz

LOTRking, you may also want to expand a bit on why those are your favorites. For those who have not heard them much it might give them a better idea about the score and more specifically why those are your selections for you favorite soundtracks of 2006.

I think I will restrain from voting until SST's 2006 Soundtrack Of The Year starts Wink

Except for "V for Vendetta" I didn't really buy any soundtrack from 2006, so sadly I can't contribute much to this thread. Sad

Top 5 Favorites:

Pan's Labyrinth - Javier Navarrete

I liked the careful, bittersweet balance between the innocent lullabies and the encroaching darkness. I thought it was a hard thing to pull off successfully so the score didn't feel overly child-like or sentimental. The on-screen impact of the score was very stunning, so it's my top pick.

Black Dahlia - Mark Isham

It was exciting to hear something powerful, dark, and dramatic from Isham, although he incorporated his trademark trumpet and jazz too.

Nativity Story - Mychael Danna

It's neat how the traditional songs were seamlessly blended into this subtle and reverent score. I was impressed by how every cue had something that caught my interest.

The Fountain - Clint Mansell

The best score I've heard so far from Mansell. It's more interesting and emotional than I first thought and grew with repeat listens.

Blood Diamond - James Newton Howard

I ended up choosing this simply because I listen to it more often than the scores listed below. Highlights for me include the repeated Archer & Solomon melody, the percussion in the action cues, and the African vocals by Youssou N'Dour.

Other scores I was considering:
La Sconosciuta
Wah-Wah
The Good German
World Trade Center
V for Vendetta
Da Vinci Code
Gino Bartali - L'intramontabile
Lady in the Water
Charlotte's Web

Some of you might be wondering why The Promise is not on my list after endorsing it so much in the SST Awards. The reason is that I was not familiar with The Promise ST when I made my original post. Now, having become quite familiar with it , I have decided to revise my list:

5. Poseidon
4. LOST
3. The Promise
2. Lady in the Water
1. EPICON

LOST: Season 2 was removed because, once becoming more familiar with it, I've decided that the season one ST is much better, and that the themes from Poseidon are better than the themes from LOST: Season 2.

I consider Epicon to be the epifani of bad taste. Epicon takes some of immediate music's scores, lengthens them, and ultimately makes them worse. They do get a bit more adventurous here than in their by-the-book film trailer scores, and while that is commendable, this sounds awkward. Take "Prelude (on Earth as in Heaven)" for example, with its English lyrics, single singer (rather than a Latin chorus), and... hip-hop beats? Spare me, please. Score music doesn't need that kind of production. Thankfully, we can't understand the Latin in scores; when you put them in English, you see just how cheesy and ridiculous they are---a la bad metal (which means most of it).

This isn't totally without merit, but when I listen to scores, I want the real deal.

However I can completely find myself in "Lady In The Water" placed at number two.

I am always amazed how much I learn from these threads. Would be neat to discuss scores discovered in 2006.. i find that I am still discovering so much that I really can not pin down only the new ones for this year

Well with much prodding here is my Top Ten List for 2006(in no particular order):

-Casino Royale by David Arnold: This score is a great mix of awesome music. The action tracks on this score are a perfect fit for the movie and great to listen to especially 'African Rundown'. The true gems of this score though are the more romantic, lighter music like 'Vesper'. Overall, a great improvement from Arnold's last Bond score and one of my favorite Arnold scores period!
Favorite Track: 'Vesper'

-Fountain by Clint Mansell: Easily Mansell's best score. I did not listen to this score much, but truly discovered this score once it started being requested a lot on SST (many times by SnowLeopard). The entire score is truly wonderful to listen to, but the last two tracks are really the best.
Favorite Track: 'Together We Will Live Forever'

-Pan's Labyrinth by Javier Navarrete: This score is truly wonderful to listen to and now after watching the movie I am convinced this score was also a perfect fit for the movie. Kudos to Navarette for creating a score that encapsulates dark material intertwined with fairytale elements.
Favorite Track: Don't have a favorite as so many of the tracks are a true delight to listen to.

-The Da Vinci Code by Hans Zimmer: An action packed score (hard to believe from Mr Zimmer eh? Wink). Zimmer had several scores come out in 2006 and while his score to Holiday is wonderful as well (and a side of Zimmer I hope we hear more of as he does a great job) I went with Da Vinci Code in my top ten because it has the best track of 2006 on it: 'Chevaliers de Sangreal'. This piece of music was a perfect fit for the movie and ranks as my #1 movie/music moment (absolutely powerful stuff, love how it continues to build).
Favorite track: Chevaliers de Sangreal (this track gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it, just WOW)

-V for Vendetta by Dario Marianelli: Wow, this score is action packed music. Marianelli did a great job with the action music, but once again the truly powerful music was the music that supported the more dramatic parts of the movie like 'Valerie'. For 2006, the music in the track 'Valerie' is a perfect fit for the part in the movie it supports and I would rank it as my second favorite movie/music moment.
Favorite Track: 'Valerie'

-Nativity Story by Mychael Danna: Never been a big fan of Mychael Danna (in fact, I prefer his brothers music, Jeff, much better generally) as haven't found much that I like from him but Nativity Story changed all of that. This score is absolutely awesome and I never get tired of listening to this music. Love how he used the strings and orchestra together! As he mentioned in his interview, he did a lot of research for this score and in the end used none of it and created what he thought would be an excellent complement to the movie and I think he without a doubt succeeded. The track 'A Star Shall Come Forth' is my third favorite movie/music moment.
Favorite Track: 'A Star Shall Come Forth'

-Lady in the Water by James Newton Howard: Not sure what it is about the Newton Howard/M. Night collaborations, but it always seems to get some of Newton Howard's best work. This score got the slight edge over Blood Diamond because it has one of my favorite tracks of 2006 on it. Now as many have said the movie could have been a lot better, but I am one of the people who did actually enjoy the movie for what it was even though it wasn't perfect. 'Healing' was my fourth favorite movie/music moment.
Favorite Track: 'Healing'

-Charlotte's Web by Danny Elfman: This is the type of music I really enjoy from Elfman. I call it the lighter side of Elfman, not too quirky and weird, but wonderful. This is a fun score that is a wonderful compliment to the movie.
Favorite Track: Wilbur's Homecoming

-Painted Veil by Alexandre Desplat: I can't really put my finger on it, but there is something special about this score to me. I thought it supported the movie quite well and I like how Desplat integrated some ethnic moments in the score. Lang Lang does wonderful piano work on this score and adds wonderful moments throughout the score.
Favorite Track: Kitty's Theme

-Alatriste by Roque Banos: Had I done this list a month ago this would not have made my list since I had never even heard about it. I only knew Banos from his score to 'The Machinist' which didn't do a lot for me. But then SnowLeopard was praising this score so I decided to check it out since I enjoyed the samples. Wow, this is truly a wonderful score and one that utilizes a guitar in several tracks that is easily more Oscar worthy than Mr Santa......well you get the picture Wink. I also love the choir when used and the string work in this score, big fan of strings!
Favorite Track: I am really enjoying the entire score, but to choose only one track I would say 'Héroe Abatido'

Honarable Mentions:
-Tales from Earthsea (Gedo Senki)
-X Men 3: The Last Stand (The Last Stand, one of my favorite tracks from 2006)
-'End Title' from Little Children also one of my favorite tracks from 2006 (rest of the score is okay, but final track is great)

Well that about covers it all! Hopefully it is interesting and provides some good info. Enjoy and I look forward to the rest of 2007 for more wonderful scores!!
