Here's another idea I thought I'd try out. I often find myself popping into chat looking for help with a particular subject/issue. I thought that it would be nice to have a place where I could look for folks that know about a specific area and might be able to help out. I'm not sure what the best way to organize this info is, yet, but we'll figure something out. In the mean time, if you'd like to offer your services to the SST community please post here describing what areas you'd be willing to help out with.
For example, I know we have IT folks, financial folks, rocket scientists, all kinds of talented folks.
I'll start, and hopefully folks will add in and make this useful.

My skill set includes primarily IT stuff:
System and network administration, primarily Linux/UNIX, but I can speak somewhat intelligently about a wide variety of IT stuff.
I'm also a fire fighter, but I don't think you'll often be looking for that kind of help here.
Feel free to hit me up in the chat, email, PM, or IM if I can help you out.

Heh, this seems like a neat idea... Don't think I'll write as much as you, Rebecca. HA
Anyhoo, lets see
Animation. I am an animator by trade, and if you ever want to chat animation or whatnot, just let me know. I can help you with...
-Animation History
-Art
-Animation Critique
-All things Animation
Along with animation, Art in general. I specialize in CG art, but have a very good critical eye and am always happy to lend an opinion.
Outdoors
-Hunting
-Fishing
-Camping
-Canoing
-etc.
Movies... I see a LOT of movies, and along with my studies in school for animation, i apply my critical eye to regular films as well. always happy to write a review or dig up an old one to share with you.
DRINKIN! HA HAAAH, i can give you a pointer or two.... Looking for a bar or hot-spot in Minneapolis? lookin' to try a new drink? I have had quite a few.
Writing. Be it creative writing for a short story or a script for a show, i can help you in all sorts of ways. once again, this goes back to my schooling
Making one h3ll of a sammich'... im not talking like subways "sandwich artists" but i can fling some mean things together with limited ingredients.
Music. I have been a Saxophone player for somewhere around 13 years, a little piano here or there, a little guitar... and if you have a question about music my mum has been teaching piano and brass for well over 30 years and my uncle has been teaching woodwinds for about the same. if i cant help ya figure something out, I'm sure they can.
thats what i can think of for now. ill think of more. i gotta get back to work.
Im just a good guy to talk to all around _________________ Rob Wilson

It would be a longer list if I named all the stuff I CAN'T help you out with. Here's a start, if I think of more later, I will add them.
1. Gift giving - I'm a terrific gift giver and always have good ideas for that "hard to buy for" person in your life. (Becca is too, but if you want more ideas, I'm here). And I'm not Martha Stewart, so I NEVER suggest you make ANYTHING.
2. I'm really good at movie trivia, even ones I haven't seen. If you say "remember the movie with the guy and that chick", I can usually tell you what movie you are thinking of.
3. Raising children.....I'm not too terrific with my own, but I have GREAT advice for other parents. LOL
4. If you have any questions about the USDA Donated Food Program, that's what I do (in Virginia).
5. I have good advice on ways to cope with a spouse that works too much. Drink...drink.. and have a cocktail.
That's all I got so far. I like the idea of this thread. Thanks J2! _________________ "I have *many* skills." -Xena |

Wow, I feel like I need to go back and add to my list. Unfortunately I probably won't.
I envisioned shorter answers, like:
"I'm a lawyer" or "I can help with financial advice" or "I can speak Esperanto"
Now what I really need is someone to come up with an idea for organizing the information here.
Thanks for participating, everybody!

Cool thread idea, J2!
Here are my areas of expertise:
Science
-Professional scientist and educator.
-Specifically, bioengineering and biotechnology, but reasonably acquainted with all fields.
Music
-I play the piano, saxophone, guitar, and a few other instruments.
-Composition, as a hobby of course.
-Electronic music production (though I'm a novice here).
Literature
-I like to read classic fiction. I try to read some contemporary fiction, though I'm hard to impress.
-I write creatively: short stories, and oh yes, that darn novel!
Theology and philosophy
-Especially as related to Christianity and scientific thought.
-But I'm interested in and respectful of all religions, and marginally interested in philosophy in general.
Feel free to PM or email me to discuss any of the above!

Well, I´m not very good advertising myself (maybe I should need help with that... any volunteers? ) but that is what I think I can offer to the community.
I´m a veterinary and I know it´s difficult (or impossible) to make a diagnosis without seeing the animal (and of course if your dog is sick, better to take it to your vet) but if you have any doubt or question about pets, pedegrees, races, illness or about feed hygiene or something...I´ll be glad to help.
Currently I´m doing a Master in animal behaviour and I´m very interested in this topic so I´ll be grateful for all the consult you want to make me about that.
Apart from the professional stuff, I can help whith Spanish-English/English-Spanish translations (or Spanish-Irunglish-English ), or if you´re coming to Spain on holidays and want some information or whatever...I can be like some kind of SST tourism office
That´s all that ocurred to me at the moment, this is my longest post so far and it probably have thousands of orthographic mistakes, but I hope it helps _________________ Fear is the mind killer |

J2,
I think this is a great idea...at least for me!
You see, I currently do not like my job and am trying to branch out on my own. My skills are:
Graphic Design
Web Design
Freehand Illustration (Comic book/cartoon)
Photo-retouching
Writing
Anyone needing help in these areas, please let me know. I would love to develop a portfolio of work to advertise myself. I am currently working on a website to showcase my work (not including the chippy stuff, though...).
Of course, I have other talents as well...
Incredibly handsome,
Fantastic sense of humor,
All around wonderful person,
Great with animals (except chipmunks, apparently),
Can always find something to make fun of someone about,
Ability to talk in funny/odd voices (as well as hear them...but that's another subject),
and the list goes on and on...but not as long as Rebecca's!
Seriously, if you need some design work/help, please feel free to contact me!
My email is: jorelson at comcast.net

Screenwriter.
Ask me about screenwriting. Ask me serious questions about film and filmmaking. If I don't know, I can find out in a hurry. And any questions about dvd would be appropriate, given my knowledge of the subject. |

Today is not a good day to ask me if I have any useful skills. But if anyone needs an Egyptologist, I'm here.
I also know a thing or two about:
Comic Books
Broadway Musicals
Attic Greek
Mac Computers
Movie trivia
Intellectual property law (my husband knows what I don't)
Jim Steinman music
Medieval Heraldry
Vampires
Further updates as warranted. |
