I don't want to spoil anyones enthusiasm, but neither Barber's "Adagio for Strings" nor Khatchaturian's "Gayane Ballet Suite-Adagio" are filmscore pieces, but classical concertworks which just happened to be included on a filmsoundtrack.
(Doesn't mean that the mentioned pieces aren't great, didn't want to say that.)

But nevertheless they are also "scores" - just not for films basically. Wink
Otherwise this thread would've been called "The saddest music pieces", not "scores".

bpewiwn, I think you're missing the point and the spirit of this thread, which was began by Jeric.

Jeric, in his inital post mentioned "Puff The Magic Dragon". This song was originally recorded as a "Pop" song by Peter, Paul, & Mary in a 1963 recording, and by your own given definiton of a "score", was not created for a film . . .

So, basically, look at the intent of the thread starter, and make your own deceisons about what you would "add" to the thread. . .

I have not taken away from the spirit, or the intent of Jeric's thread Laughing

i agree with you Snow i love this score! it has become one of my favorites. it's a great movie too and it is warm as it is sad. it has a very reminesing, sentimental, nostalgic, kind hearted feel to it and being that a lot of the music is synth it gives off a darker tone makes it a bit more atmospheric and at times very islolating.

...that is, if we are to judge by the faves most often mentioned, you all appear to be well under 40...

how about, for sad, "Two For The Seesaw" by the great Andre Previn?

In fact, talk about sad -- is there a theme much sadder than Herrmann's Rosebud Theme for "Kane"?

Just thought we should reach back a little...

hi, always thought the following were quite sad/emotion when listening to:

It's Over (Goodbye) / Brad Fiedel (Terminator 2)
Radio / Marco Beltrami (Terminator 3)
The Life of David Gale / Craig Armstrong (Life of David Gale/World Trade Centre Trailer Music)
There's No Goodbye...Only Love / James Horner (Perfect Storm)
A Heart Beats In Space / Ennio Morricone (Mission To Mars)
Tennessee / Hans Zimmer (Pearl Harbor)
Road To Perdition / Thomas Newman (Road to Perdition)

Some of the concluding tracks to Howard Shore's The Fly are real tear-jerkers (Plasma Pool, The Last Visit, Finale). It helps to have seen the movie, but they're quite powerful on their own as well.

Some other personal favourites:

The Immolation Scene (John Williams, SW Ep.III)
The Abyss (Alan Silvestri, The Abyss)
