Hi, SST Folks !

Here is something very special. Especially for the folks from overseas. Ever heard from "Vienna Modern" ??

It is a huge (annual) cultural festival in the Art & cCulture Capital of Austria. Vienna over a period of one month (1st November - 1st December 2007) delivers extra ordinary art and themes...

FILM

Frank Scheffer Retrospective
8 to 11 November 2007 | Wiener Konzerthaus | Neuer Saal

picture of Frank Scheffer: http://www.wienmodern.at/WM/07/media_all/0102/Film.jpg

At the centre of the film focus at Wien Modern 2007 is a four-day retrospective dedicated to the work of the Dutch filmmaker Frank Scheffer, born in 1956. Scheffer's film and documentary work is closely connected to the history of music in the 20th century. Like no other director he has followed the traces of its development and its numerous branches for over twenty years: from Gustav Mahler, Arnold Schönberg and Igor Stravinsky to Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Elliott Carter, Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage and Frank Zappa.

Frank Scheffer met some of the composers personally and followed them over years. His unremitting questioning of the cinematographic medium in the often difficult encounter of music and image has decisively extended the options for the description and translation of music into film. Two very different reference points in the history of film constantly enrich his work: Eisenstein's montage principles and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's genius for finding a new camera angle or movement for every scene.

The retrospective shows Scheffer's successful attempts to enlist the structures of musical composition in film by means of montage and camera work. In the process Scheffer's films are frequently full of humour and related with stringency and tension so that there is no contradiction between the demands of serious art and entertainment value and curiosity is aroused to engage with the possible connections between film and music.

The opening film of the retrospective at Wien Modern 2007 is Scheffer's first long film with John Cage and Elliot Carter: «Time is Music». For the twentieth anniversary of this film, which is of special importance for Frank Scheffer and has been shown at many international film festivals, we are showing a reconstructed 16mm version.

In spring 2007 Filmmuseum Amsterdam took over the complete archive of the 51 year-old filmmaker. Frank Scheffer is one of the few contemporary Dutch documentary filmmakers to have this honour bestowed upon him. We thank Filmmuseum Amsterdam for its friendly support.

The film programme is curated by the Berlin filmmaker and director of the Doku Arts film festival, Andreas Lewin, in close cooperation with Frank Scheffer.

Hi, SST Folks !

What's up in 2008 ?? - 2007 is close to it's end, and behind the horizon the new Film Festivals 2008 awake...

E.g. one event has it's 50th birthday: THE NORDIC FILM DAYS LUEBECK (close to Hamburg, North Germany)

...The Nordic Film Days Lübeck, first presented by the Lübeck Film Club in 1956 and taken over by the Hanseatic City of Lübeck in 1971, has one of the longest traditions of any film festival worldwide. It is the only festival in Germany, and the only one in Europe apart from the event later founded in Rouen, France, which is entirely devoted to the presentation of films from the North and Northeast of Europe.

Feature films, documentaries and short films from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden are presented at this four-day event every year at the beginning of November. In addition, there is an extensive children's and youth film programme and a retrospective devoted to important eras, specific genres or famous persons of film history. Accompanying the film programme are seminars, discussions and roundtable talks.

The Nordic Film Days Lübeck is both an audience festival and an important meeting place for the film industry in Germany and northern Europe. Many directors whose debut works were presented in Lübeck have gone on to earn fame around the world - such as Bille August, Lasse Hallström, Aki Kaurismäki or Fridrik Thór Fridriksson.

The Nordic Film Days Lübeck is put on by the Hanseatic City of Lübeck in cooperation with the film institutes and foundations of Scandinavia as well as the corresponding film institutions in the Baltic countries. Patrons of the festival are the ambassadors of the Nordic countries in Germany. Honorary President is the Norwegian actress and film director Liv Ullmann. Media partner is the television and radio broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR).

Altogether eight [8] prizes are being given every year, for details please see Awards

Hi, SST Folks !

... Berlin, Berlin, Berlin... Even American Presidents like to say "I am a Berliner".

Since the fall of Berlin Wall in 1989 Berlin became not only Germany's new capital (Rec.: Before for West Berlin it was Bonn.), today Berlin can be count internationally as one of the toughest, high energy loaded centers for creativity art & media works.

Historically Berlin was always a very important centre for film productions. And today ?? - MediaCity Babelsberg, part of Berlin with FilmStudio & FilmPark is one of the most attractive spots for international productions...

http://www.studiobabelsberg.com

For the New Yorker art scene (music, painting etc. ...) Berlin seems high attractive (very cheap rents, an annual >500 Mio. EUR budget of States government for art support (subventions)) are ideal conditions. And a hot club scene. E.g. Berlin stepped forward as the TangoCity No. 1 outside of Argentina.

The same trend we find within Germany. Music, Film and TV industries move from the three big centres (Munich, Cologne and Hamburg) during the last years to Berlin.

And on it's own - under these excellent conditions - the Film Fest "BERLINALE" developed to one of the worldwide most important events...

The latest PressRelease from 22nd Nov 2007 throws it's shadow forward we are close to the festival start in February 2008...

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Nov 22, 2007:
TV5MONDE and the German-French Youth Office (FGYO) are now open for bids to join the jury for the prize “Dialogue en perspective”
Young film lovers with a passion for critical film analysis can apply from today on to become a jury member for the Berlinale award “Dialogue en perspective”. The prize was initiated by TV5MONDE and the FGYO, and will be awarded at the 58th Berlin International Film Festival (February 7-17 2008) to a film from the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section.

Seven German and French cinéastes, aged between 18 and 29, will be selected for the jury. The prize will be awarded in 2008 for the fifth time. Film lovers with a passion for intense discussions with like-minded people will have the unique chance, offered by TV5MONDE and the FGYO, to observe and actively participate in the upcoming Berlinale.

Those who have a passion for discussion, a strong opinion about films, and who can express themselves in both German and French, meet the requirements for the young jury.

The deadline for applications is Monday, January 7, 2008.

Hi, SST Folks !

.... the "short cuts colone no. 10" seems a little different from the big festivals. For beginners in film composing this international event might be the right place:

* Student films
* Asian movie scene (Korea and others)
* BELGIUM Special
* media capital of Russia
* Cologne Shorts (regional scene)
* children programme
etc. ...

Sounds interesting. Have a look on your own...

Enjoy listeing to good music! - ElJay from Europe/Germany/Hamburg

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

short cuts cologne no 10

Thematically, the short film often focuses on the elementary questions and problems of life. It constantly discovers innovative possibilities of a complex atmosphere.

And this is exactly why the short film will go on forever; meanwhile, the Cologne International short film festival shorts cuts cologne is entering its ninth season.

From November 25th until December 2nd 2007, the Koelner Filmhaus will present approximately 180 films at various locations, ranging from short fiction and documentary to animation and experimental film. With its technical and aesthetic diversity, the cinematically demanding programme goes far beyond meeting the common expectations.

As usual, the highlight of the festival is the international competition. Approximately 60 short films from more than 2000 entries from approximately 70 countries have been selected for the competition. Furthermore, short cuts cologne captivates its audience through various special programmes such as Belgium Special, Films from St. Petersburg, South Korea, clips for kids.

Our Belgium Special, which has meanwhile become a traditional feature, is dedicated to the characteristic productions of Belgian film makers. Russia’s media capital city St. Petersburg is represented by extraordinary animations and documentary movies.

With the motto “clips for kids”, we presents a colourful and exciting programme for children and adolescents. And also we look back on the very best of the first nine years of short cuts cologne.

In addition to the already known series, we will place a special emphasis on films from North Rhine-Westphalia this year. Planned are the following categories: “Student Films NRW”, “cologne shorts”, and a programme with films by winners of the sponsorship-awards of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The student films NRW are already a traditional part of the short cuts cologne. In this programme, we offer young producers of the North Rhine-Westphalian film-schools and -classes the opportunity to present their work at our festival.

Films of the diverse Cologne film scene are shown in the programme cologne shorts. These are often imaginative films, produced on a low budget and in many cases even produced here in our Koelner Filmhaus. This programme first and foremost offers independent filmmakers a platform by which they are able to introduce their films to a larger audience.

A new feature is a programme with films produced by filmmakers who have won the sponsorship-awards of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Many previous award-winners meanwhile have gained fame in the film business, although they had also started off in a small (short) way. With this programme we want to illustrate (also to the public) how important a state sponsorship is and what might result thereof.
short cuts cologne regards itself as a forum for the presentation of international short films and as a meeting place for domestic and foreign filmmakers. As a media city and as a domicile/working place of many media representatives, Cologne plays an integral role in this aspect.

Foreword

The Kölner Filmhaus proudly presents… 10 Years of Short Cuts Cologne – International Shortfilm Festival.

When the festival started ten years ago, no one would have foreseen this story of success: 50 film rolls with more than 300 short films are shown on 8 days, selected from more than 2,500 entries.

The international competition will again be the core of the festival. Filmmakers from all over the world have sent their films to Cologne and the festival-team watched all of them until their eyes became squared. Out of 40,000 minutes of film the movies have been chosen and are now going to be shown on 8 days.

You will find the classical rolls – the ones who are like old, beloved friends – for example the Clips for Kids or the Belgium Special. Again and again you can be astonished how many great short film our smaller neighbour produces. As a contrast to the classics we show a film-roll with productions from South Korea. You might be eager to find out what can be discovered in the movie scene in Asia. And since things more often happen unexpected than expected – an unexpected roll with documentaries from St. Petersburg will be shown. Perhaps unusual, but surely unforgettable.

In Cologne people normally are especially proud of their town. Therefore, one roll has to be announced in a particular way: 10 Years of Kölner Gruppe. That this is not just about vaingloriousness, but about awarded short films made by innovative filmmakers from just around the corner, should bring everyone to the cinema.

We should not forget to mention the Student Films of NRW. And besides the Erotic Shorts. Or the Cologne Shorts. And in addition to that… but wait – much talk, but short in meaning: This programme is as varied and excellent as it can only become after ten years of festival experience. This enables and obliges us to a roll of »Best of 10 Years Short Cuts Cologne«. Here you will see the essence of ten years of festival.

The story of success will surely go on – at the latest in 2008. Than again it will be announced: The Kölner Filmhaus proudly presents…

The Committee of the Kölner Filmhaus
and your festival-team
