The lesson here is you can't judge a score solely on the film it was written for. I heard the exciting TM score before I saw the movie, which turned out to be a let down, but a good flick nonetheless. (It was much better than the original film from the 60s.)

There are also plenty of great films with lousy soundtracks (Ladyhawke).

The accusation that the score is unoriginal because it sounds like other music in places could be directed at practically every composer. John Williams is a prolific quoter of other composers: Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Wagner, Korngold (discover the Star Wars theme in his score to King's Row) - these guys are the most quoted (besides his quoting himself). I'm not dissing Williams - most of his scores are great and stand on their own regardless of the movies.

Familiarity--recollection of something that touches us when we hear a musical phrase--is partly why we all enjoy soundtracks so much, especially if we liked the movie the music came from. Composers use that collective recognition intentionally. (How many times have you heard the Miserere quoted just before somebody dies in a film?) Of course, Badelt was probably not intentionally quoting Goldsmith, but they were both probably going after the same emotional response.

You bring up very respectable points. However the issues surrounding the TM score are more then they appear. Its an even bigger issue because the temp track used before the score was made by Badelt, was in fact, that very goldsmith track. Some say he basically copied and varied on that original Goldsmith content.

If you don’t know what temp tracks are, ask me.

I'm curious where you found out the inside scoop on Badelt's process. I saw a feature (or maybe it was the commentary track) on the Titus DVD with Goldenthal talking about how he used his Batman Forever score as a temp track and Julie Taymor liked it so much that he wrote something very similar for Titus. And being familiar with the BF score, I immediately recognized the similarity when I saw Titus for the first time.

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. I wonder if Goldsmith objects to Badelt's similar track? In any case, I guess I still don't see why the Time Machine score is bad because it's like something else. Aren't all the space movie scores a lot alike since Star Wars came out. It seems Williams "pioneered" the use of a traditional classical score with the space genre instead of the spacey Star Trek (TV series) futuristic style that was typical until the 70s.

Some of the most moving movie scores are straight from the classical repertoire : 2001 (R Strauss & J Strauss); Platoon (and others) (Barber); Elizabeth (Elgar); Excalibur (Wagner & Orff); Madness of King George (Handel)... My point is that these scores are certainly not original, but contribute to the film and the soundtrack fan's listening pleasure. And, yes, they are credited to the original composers, and that may be the beef about Badelt's score for TM. But I've included it among my favorites, which for the most part are more similar than they are unique.

Wow - picking up a 4-year-old discussion - who'da thunk? This is an interesting topic for me to return to as I have since heard several composers who seem to recycle their themes. Does anyone else have trouble distinguishing tracks from Thomas Newman's American Beauty, Lemony Snicket's..., and Shawshank Redemption scores? And Alexandre Desplat's The Queen and Birth are very similar. What's interesting is that I do not like the film American Beauty but like the others, and I do not like Birth but like The Queen; so when I hear these scores, because they are so similar, I have mixed feelings.

That's one heck of a bump! I have no problems distinguishing Thomas Newman scores but I know what you mean. Welcome back!

i believe you could be referring to "The Edge"? it reminded me a little of that as well but only in the main theme. The main theme from the Edge and the The Time Machine (or Professor Hartdegen's theme) are a little similar the rest of the album is completley different.
