Can you see it?
Can you hear it?
Can you smell it?
Can you feel it?
Can you see it?
Men and women
On the battlefield
Marching to the unknown
Some are barely adults
And yet they march
Can you see it?
Can you hear it?
Footsteps
Moving in unison
A sickening click is heard
The sound of footsteps
Is replaced
Replaced with heavy breathing echoing
Echoing through the trees
The mine was defused
This time around
Beads of sweat
Fall to the ground
Constant engine rumbling
Explosions all around
Comrades fallen
A branch snaps
Was it the enemy?
No, it was only you
Can you hear it?
Can you feel it?
Thirst and hunger looms
The constant wishing you were home
Only makes it harder
The fear, the uncertainty
Is so real
You can reach out
To touch it
The battlefield
The cool, hard metal
Of the gun
Of the ship
Of the jet
The grass
The snow
The rock
The water
The air
The emptiness
Can you feel it?
Can you see it?
Can you hear it?
Can you smell it?
Can you feel it?
No, you cannot
Men and women
Gave their lives
So you don't have to
So you don't have to
Live through what they did
Next time you see
A veteran on the street
Say thank you
"Thank you for giving
Giving your life
So I may live
For I did not
I did not see
I did not hear
I did not smell
I did not feel
What you did
May you and your comrades
Always be remembered"
Thank you for all that you have given that my freedoms will remain that way--free. |

I was browsing the forums and I cam across this thread. I wanted to say that I appreciate all of our men in uniform from your local volunteer firefighters all the way to the infantry men abroad. Thank you very much for our freedom. _________________ I do not wake up with thoughts of control and rebellion, but thoughts of purpose and righteousness and the empowerment to fulfill those convictions that define me. |
