Thomas Newman is very high on my Fave Composers list as well. I think I have most, if not all, of his scores that have been released on CD.

And I agree with Pete about the stylistic similarities between Tom, David, and Michael Convertino, all of whom were buddies in college and family friends. They even had a rock band together when they were in their early twenties. My, how times have changed. Smile

Tom is certainly a most wonderful composer and one of the nicest guys in the industry. The fact that the has reached a level of creativity unsurpassed by many and possessing a knack for constant experimentation as well as the skill to build his own really strange instruments, have given him the chance to go beyond the status of your regular film composer.

Two is right on the money about Convertino and both Newman brothers going to college together, however in honest truth I don't find many similarities in Tom's, David's and Michael's work. Tom struggled hard in the beginning to find his own particular voice which he succeeded based on constant experimentation and sound manipulation (and always favoring oboe, marimba, his is a much more percussive, contemporary style), while Michael's style has mostly remained consistently the same (dreamy strings and synth, hardly any percussion at all, much more interested in creating an ambience than following actions on screen). David, in comparison, is a much more traditional-sounding composer, more interested in live recordings, in catching all the little snippets of action on the screen, in supporting the whole orchestra).

Of course. Tom is the one who jumped into the A+ list of composers, while Michael and David have remained somewhat in the backburner. Getting gigs in film is one of the hardest things to achieve, and the new studio system is not an open field for composers, they are mostly subject to typecasting, so David gets the comedy gigs (with some action-adventure in-between), Tom will get the dramas and Michael has, of late, having to conform to score independent movies, with the liabilities this supposes (non-existent music budget, five or six freelance musicians, no orchestras, etc).

Anyway, Tom's evolving style is truly interesting. It's sad that most of his early works are not available, but nonetheless it would be cool to have a day for him at SST chronologically arranged, there are a lot nuances here and there where he played with a certain style in his early scores only to reassure it with the next ones or make variations on it.

Oh, and an interesting note for the trivia hounds, Tom orchestrated the "Darth Vader's Death" cue on Return of the Jedi. Smile

I think it´s no secret that Tom Newman is my favorite composer. I could get lost in his music forever. There´s so much emotion, sense of longing... and life within his compositions.
He´s able to pull at your heart´s strings with one single note and let it resonate it for a long time.
The most wonderful thing about his music is that you rather have to feel it than hear it.
But enough of this fanboy talk! Wink

Just as a passing remark... Top Newman-scores which are still missing at SST:

- Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael (tender early work)
- Red Corner (Newman goes far east)
- Mad City (busy multi-culti urban drama score)
and... of course
- Josh & S.A.M. (wonderful new-age roadmovie music) Smile

I think we used to have a few of these scores but they weren't played as often and were removed. I would support adding back Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael, The Player, Josh & Sam to have a better Newman retrospective short program or composer day.
