I think Howard Shore has become fairly recognizable thanks to whole Lord of the Rings. And I'm definitely a huge James Newton Howard fan so I can usually pick him out. _________________ "WHERE ARE WE GOING??? AND WHY AM I IN THIS HANDBASKET?!?!?" |

Damn right...J N H has a very haunting sound..and totaly helps give Mr Salamans movies an added atmosphere. There colaberation could soon be as good as Speilberg/Williams...

My vote goes to James Horner. He definately knows how to make a score for glorious military movies. _________________ "By the time they had diminished from 50 to 8, the other dwarves began to suspect 'Hungry.'" -- Gary Larson |

Yes indeed!!!! I bet even now...George W is pacing the white house listening to Courage under Fire !!! He is a diverse composer, with the likes of Braveheart,Titanic and a beuatiful mind.

I am adding Hans Zimmer to that list and I give another vote for John Williams. _________________ Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate... leads to suffering. |

James Newton Howard is one of my favs whom I can recognize immediately, as is almost any Basil Poledouris piece. I also want to mention James Horner, whom I don’t think is spectacular, but that familiar sound he uses can also be picked out. _________________ By responding in any way shape or form, you contractually agree that I’m right, and youre wrong. |

We might want to change the subject to the most unrecognizable but popular composer. I think that would be interesting because I can think of too many that are recognizable.
Goldsmith can be hard to pick out sometimes. _________________ "Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?." -Maximus

As a huge fan of John Williams, I can usually recognize his style. Hans Zimmer is also great, but not that easily recognizable. I also have to agree with J N H.
Another one that hasn't come up yet is Trevor Rabin. He is pretty recognizable. Not the best of composers, but certainly not one of the worst. I'd rank him just below J N H.
On the other hand, James Horner is also very recognizable, but I think he has lost his touch since Titanic. I think his latest scores sound too much alike. Take "Enemy at the gates", which in some cases is a spitting image of "Titanic", which (in very small cases though) was a spitting image of "Apollo 13". _________________ "Anything one man can imagine,

I would go with John Williams...
I can really pick him out.
But other would include Mr. Zimmer and Mr. Elfman.
I can always tell them out of the crowd.
As for one that are hard to recognize, I would agree that Jerry Goldsmith is a tough one... _________________ To win a battle, you must fight it first. |

I am about 90 percent sure that the general movie going audience knows john williams, rather than james horner, newman, newton etc.
and i would mainly say that becasue of his spielberg connection.
I would also say that steven spielberg would come to mind as americas most reconnzied director. |

I think that most people also will recognize the John Williams scores not from Steven Spielberg movies. Like Home Alone, Harry Potter, Star Wars, ...
My vote goes to John Williams, but I'm also a huge fan of Zbigniew Preisner and Alan Silvestri. |

I'd say James Horner is the most recognizable, with John Williams in close second (though the latter is definitely the most popular contemporary composer) |
