Definitely John Williams, who's mastered the ability to balance the string sections out with the brass and percussion. Second comes James Horner, who tends to favor rich brass overtures combined with choral arias (COUGH COUGH Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind)in addition to using unique instruments for the movie's environment (Braveheart with Bagpipes). Next would probably James Newton Howard, who enjoys the quiet undertones of classical-style piano mixed with the string section and maybe a trumpet or two. Needless to say, these are the three who stand out the most. |

Wow! Another old thread revived!
I liked this thread. Was a bit surprised that nobody had mentioned John Barry as an easily recognisible composer. Unless I just missed it. |

Randy Newman is definetly the most recognizable for me (Especially when he sings). All of his soundtracks are hummers, simple but damn good. |

I would have to say John Barry. I can pick him out almost instantly. I like his style so it is not a bad thing.
I think next would be Horner. Other than some surprising productions like Thunderheart I can recognise him pretty easily as well.

Danny Elfman, definetly Elfman.
His quirky old-school style really leaps from screen and cd.
Oh yeah and the hacks from Media ventures their music always sticks out like a sore thumb.  |

John Williams, Danny Elfman, Elliot Goldenthal, Alan Silvestri, Howard Shore, Christopher Young, John Carpenter and "Media Ventures" are amongst the most recognizable composers. (I'm not quite sure whether it's because each of them has got such a unique voice - or because I know a lot of scores by these guys.)
Jerry Goldsmith, Carter Burwell, Marc Mancina, Marco Beltrami, Shirley Walker and James Newton Howard are NOT. At least not to me. |

Maybe it's beacuse i listen to his music so often, but I think Dennis McCarthy has a very distinctive style. It's always a combination of low strings, high strings and brass, like french horns. Even the music I didn't know it was composed by him, I recognized in seconds. I know he's not exactly the most famous or beloved composer, but to me he's a favorite, just unique. |

i had to check the original question again, because clearly the four MOST recognisable film composers are: Bernard Herrmann, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Max Steiner & Aaron Copland....or is it just my age?

Beside Barry I am surprised that nobody mentionned Miklos Rosza. Beside those two I'll say that I can usually tell if a score is from Bernard Herrman, James Horner (earlier work), Ennio Morricone, Vladimir Cosma, Pino Donnagio and John Carpenter...  |
