|
I got a new bike about a month ago. This bike is a Fuji Absolute 3.0 in Night Burgundy. I got it to replace Rozinante, the pink and purple Huffy I've had since I was confirmed.
I am embarrassed to admit that, while I think of bikes like horses, I haven't named this one yet. So I'm asking for your help. I have created a poll above with some of the top contenders. Obviously, I like fantasy names, and I admit I spent some time with an old English dictionary. But I'm also totally open to suggestions.
As for the bike's personality, our early relationship has not been without incident. He's fast and light, but the gears gave me trouble and keeping his tire pressure up is proving annoying. (Lousy presta valve.) So he's not a placid mount. But it's bad luck to have a bike without a name. So please, feel free to give me your opinions and ideas, knowing, of course, that I reserve the right to ignore any and all of them, because he's my bike. I'm going to close this poll in 15 days, because I never get anything done without a deadline.
Thanks! |

You are hilarious, Lady.
I had to go with Scirfeax. It just stood out to me. I like the way it sounds (at least the way I'm pronouncing it), and its meaning can hint at more than just the bike's hues.

How about Mjölnir? The bike has a looming sense of power to it (maybe because of the choice of colors) so I thought it was fitting... _________________ I do not wake up with thoughts of control and rebellion, but thoughts of purpose and righteousness and the empowerment to fulfill those convictions that define me. |

How about Bob? Good old fashioned name Can't remember what it means but I'm sure it is something to do with "great bike". |

Thanks, wlz! Unfortunately, I like Mjölnir so much, I've already got a rubber mallet named that. I suppose I should mention that I name EVERYTHING. My car, my daemon, my computer, my bike helmet, favorite pieces of clothing… And like with everything I name, eventually the bike will just find a moniker that feels right.
Mellow, that is certainly a good, and even Anglo-Saxon sounding suggestion. The bike, however, disagrees. |

How about "Kouun"? It's Japanese for good speed.
Also means: blessedness blessing bonne fortune break chance favorable fate felicity fluke fortune Godspeed good fortune good job good speed good spin good thing lady luck luck luckiness mercy muzzle prosperity success thrift _________________ I do not wake up with thoughts of control and rebellion, but thoughts of purpose and righteousness and the empowerment to fulfill those convictions that define me. |

I voted for Rapidash... just liked the sound of it.
If I were to buy a nice new bike for myself (which isn't very likely) and if I were to go to the trouble of naming it (which I probably wouldn't), I'd call it "Mega-Möhre".
I'll try to explain the meaning...
The word "Möhre" (literally meaning carrot) is sometimes used to describe an object that is considerably past its prime but still barely functional.
Since that description wouldn't actually fit my hypothetical nice new bike, I slapped a "mega" in front of "Möhre" to imply some vague sense of greatness.
Of course you could interpret the "mega" to mean that the poor bike is a massively "Möhr-ish", but I choose to interpret it differently. _________________ "Welcome to the paranoia club; cheapest fees in the universe and membership lasts forever."

First, wlz, nice! Thanks for "Kouun." Definitely in the running.
Y'know, alien, möhre is how you could describe my old bike. Technically, Rozinante still works. She's old, though, like her namesake, and the problem isn't that she breaks down a lot. The problem is that when she does break down, the bike shop has to track down rare and expensive replacement parts for her. BTW, I like your signature. _________________ I have a book coming out. I suppose there's no place for a platypus' name in that poll
So I go for hyrngran
Spoiler: platypuses don't like bicycle riding, the tail is as long as the legs |

Platypi are one of the few poisonous warm-blooded mammals, m_p. I'm sure that makes up for a lot.
Well, less than a week to go, and no clear winner is emerging yet. Hrm. I may just hang it up and name him Usul. Or not.
Please cast a vote if you haven't yet! _________________ I have a book coming out. Wanna see it?

I voted Embarr, because I like Celtic better than Old English.....pretty good reason, eh? LOL _________________ "My Logic is Undeniable" - I, Robot |

I'm the one who picked Comet. I loved Brisco and Comet's are shiny and fast and pretty.

I've chosen 'Brego' because I like this (horse)name since I've read LOTR. |

As it is a fast, dark, nervous new bike, i'd call it "Tornado" as Zorro' horse ! _________________ In tartiflette we trust !! |

BQ, somehow I knew you would know who Brisco County, Jr. was, and Comet. As for Tornado, PomPom, I considered that, but as my bike isn't black, it wouldn't be appropriate. I take colors, like myself and everything else, too dang seriously, I know. A white bike would have been Asfaloth or Artax. If this red bike were a girl, I would have gone with Ginger.
Brego seems to be winning so far. Hrm. "Đin nama is cynglich." - Aragorn |
