Attention, movie (and list) buffs. It's time for the annual presentation of AFI's Top 10. This year it's America's 10 Greatest Films in 10 Classic Genres:

-Gangster
-Animated
-Western
-Romantic Comedy
-Sports
-Sci-Fi
-Epic
-Courtroom Drama
-Mystery
-Fantasy

Great list of stars doing the presentations.

Set your recorders for CBS at 8PM (E/P), 7PM (C).

I object to animation being listed as a genre. Animation is a medium, and as such it can be used for all sorts of genres. I know, in this country it seems restricted to children's movies and fantasy, but it needn't be. This creates a ghetto for some very good fantasy, sci-fi, and comedy films, which then may not be seen as such, only as animated films.

In unrelated news, I kind of hope that My Cousin Vinny ends up in the "Courtroom Drama" category. Aside from being very funny and well-written, it's also one of the best depictions of actual court procedure in movies, according to one of my husband's law professors.

Interesting Top 10 in 10 Genres lists.

As always, the AFI had me nodding my head in agreement and other times scratching my head in wonder.

For example, while I think Schindler's List is a fantastic film, I'd never thought of it as an epic before. I think Braveheart definitely should have made that top ten list. Or even Glory, an enormously under-rated film.

I was also amazed that Pan's Labyrinth didn't make the Fantasy list, but then I guess the -A- F I only looks at American films. That list in particular demonstrates what a dirth of quality fantasy films Hollywood has produced. I mean, Groundhog Day? Sure, it was a fun film, but one of the 10 all-time greatest fantasy films? I don't know. They nailed it with The Wizard of Oz, though. Way ahead of its time.

I also just don't understand the perenniel love fest with Stanley Kubrick. I suppose 2001 deserves the praise (but I don't know about the best all-time SF film). And A Clockwork Orange? Please. The Matrix should have made the top 5 easily, yet it didn't even break the top ten!?.

They pretty much got the Sports list down. Except for Caddyshack. Again, come on. Give me The Natural or even Chariots of Fire (or was that a British film?).

Oh well. The AFI's lists are what they are.

Thanks for the links!

Mr. Green
