Okay, so TV themes are often score anyway. There have been a lot of TV shows made into movies. Some have no musical link to the show's music (Aeon Flux, Transformers) while some lovingly incorporate it. It's the latter category that interests me here. Can anyone think of some good examples of this?

For example, two movies I saw recently got me thinking about this. One is Get Smart. Trevor Rabin wrote the score, and uses the original Get Smart theme a few times, though the score itself is really just a Zimmer-derived action score, and not very interesting to me.

The other film is Speed Racer, in which Michael Giacchino uses the original Speed Racer theme song in almost every track. As the review at Soundtrack.net says,
Quote:
Of course he uses the famous Nobuyoshi Koshibe theme. Love goes beyond what he does with it. To use an elaborate metaphor, Giacchino takes the theme apart like a custom built car and uses every part, organically rearranging the little pieces as various leitmotifs throughout the movie.

The result is a score better than the movie deserves, frankly. It's another pastiche score from Giacchino, but I like it.

Any other examples you guys can think of?

Well, the Star Trek movies spring to mind. And of course, Goldsmiths theme for film kind of went back and forth between TV and film several times (wonder if that has happened with any other themes!)

Of course, Giacchino also used the Mission Impossible theme and some other TV score material liberally in his score for MI:3.

No other examples at the moment, but I'll think on it.

Well, I have an inverse to this I suppose. Batman: The Animated Series kept the Elfman batman theme. I was pretty happy with that. Smile

True enough, wlz, but then Shirley Walker wrote an even better one. Besides, that's going in the opposite direction.

I think Goldenthal used elements of the TV show theme in his score for S.W.A.T. Wasn't that a TV show? Confused

Good point, Sirius. I'd forgotten about them, and I'm not as familiar with those scores. I think the 3rd movie makes the most use of Shifirin's theme. That was, of course, Giacchino again.

I've gravedigging in my own thread to share something I found recently. I don't know how many of you are fans of the British comedy series Blackadder, starring Rowan Atkinson. Here's one of the versions of the theme song:

A composer recently recorded a "Variation and Fugue" on the theme, which I kind of like. You can hear a sample here:
