Michael Giacchino

In the early part of the year, I half-jokingly suggested that "MGFC" should refer first to Murray Gold (composer of Doctor Who etc) and Michael Giacchino fans should find another acronym. Since then, Michael Giacchino has been responsible for soundtracks for two of the best films of the year - Star Trek and Up and I am much more of a fan than I was.

Most of the tracks on Star Trek are popular, and the initial themes (Star Trek, Nice to Meld You, That New Car Smell etc) are all interesting, if not amazing. But as with the movie, it is only at the end, when all the threads are pulled together that you suddenly are seeing the true picture of reborn Star Trek. In the case of the soundtrack, it is the End Credits track, where the new themes are effortlessly blended with original Star Trek music that you feel everything pull together into a coherent wonderful whole.

Up by contrast goes straight into the main themes, from the titles to Married Life to Carl Goes Up, you are already established into the fun yet poignant mood that reflects the movie. Again, the end credits are a great track for pulling together the whole soundtrack.

Unfortunately, Land of the Lost shows that not all of Michael Giacchino's work is gold but the previous two albums stand out enough for me to nominate him.
[And his tendency for jokes in track titles - Does it Still McFly? etc -doesn't hurt in my opinion]

I nominate Alexandre Desplat for another very productive year (Cheri, Coco Avant Chanel, Julie & Julia, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and Fantastic Mr. Fox). I was especially impressed with Fantastic Mr. Fox for its unexpected combination of banjos, strings, percussion instruments, and Morricone-esque whistling. What fun stuff!

I still feel a little hasitation with Giacchino. That has nothing to do with the scores but just the fact that "Up" has not been released on cd.
Maybe that's not Michael's fault but he could at least stand up against that or refuse.

So therefore my nomination for this year is for the nice work delivered by:

Henry Jackman for "Monsters vs.Aliens"

Then it sounds like it's irrelevant, neh? Can't we just judge the people on the work they produce?

What is he gonna refuse? To create score for Disney? The nomination here at SST? He's probably a work-for-hire, so he probably doesn't even own the copyright on the music (totally guessing here, given it's Disney we're talking about) and as a result, he has no control over how it's released. Does anyone know if he's released a statement, or talked in interviews, about the format of release?

Only 3 composers submitted and 2 days left!

If you have some last minute nominations in mind, now would be the ideal time Smile
