If any of you have suggestions as to what we should include in the chat testdrive, please post it here. If you have a favorite type of chat system, please let us know. We will be testing one new system each week, and based on your feedback, we shall decide which system to go with. Thank you _________________ “Without music, life would be a mistake.”

IMHO : keep the system lean and simple...
The only problem we really have is the fact that there is no handle authentication. _________________ "By the time they had diminished from 50 to 8, the other dwarves began to suspect 'Hungry.'" -- Gary Larson |

KISS! (keep it simple, stupid)
I like the chat window we have now, but I would like to see something extra. Maybe a link to "advanced chat" so we can keep the same frame, but add additional functionality if we want to. Keep in mind that almost everyone who visits the site will chat, but only if its easy. Understand that the chat gets a lot of use, but only because of its simplicity.
This is my word, live by it. |

I agree with the KISS theory. I think many of us chat while we are [supposed to be] working, so the easier [to sneak on and chat] the better. I also agree that some kind of user authentication would be nice. [Although it is sometimes quite fun to make up a different user name] I don't think any of us want someone to "borrow" our username.
Thanks! |

Keep it simple. Keep it on the web page itself and not some extra window we have to open. Sure nickname authentication would be nice, but once again keep it simple.
Also, please don't add a private message system. It'll ruin the chat. You go into IRC channels today and everyone's silent because they're talking via private messages. If we really need to send a private message to someone on this board we can do it through the forum's private message system.
In a world of candy and fantasy I'd love a way to make "Eye of the Tiger" play indefinitely over Caliburn's stream when he's lurking for hours on end looking at porn/a.k.a. "working" (look closely at his Avatar and you'll see what I mean). |

Well Slowmo saw it too. He called it "coital".
Shall we put it up to a vote? |

Naah... Then I'd have to assume the role of smartass. And I think everybody has the right to react when addressed personally even if the topic does not suggest so.
As for the topic... I already said my mind.
Btw: about the forum : I think these LONG threads (with 6+ replies) are so annoying to follow...
I'm thinking, if anyone has an interesting idea for the chat, let that person just start a new topic for it.
Thank you for your attention.
PS : also off topic : yes, the avatar is a Noldor elf in front of a dragon, just enlarge it _________________ "By the time they had diminished from 50 to 8, the other dwarves began to suspect 'Hungry.'" -- Gary Larson |

Getting back to the point of the discussion here would like to put in my 2 cents. I would not change the chat system in any way other than to introduce user authentication. We know each other by our handles and trust can be broken when those handles are not kept. I know that it has been done in good fun but there are those who will not do it in fun and this will help prevent that. Other than that i MUST subscribe to the KISS theory as previously noted. Make it easy because if you try to make it idiot proof they will just build a better idiot. Anyway those are my ramblings. _________________ A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day. - Calvin and Hobbes - |

You're the one scaring children with that avatar of yours.
See what happened to my Avatar? It was a happy face until it saw that "thing" under your name.
Oh yeah.. the topic... eh, keep it simple and no private messages through the chat. |

Another thing I thought of...I like the chat only having one big room. I'd rather not see a bunch of rooms. |

Well for me. I would just like to see that no one can take my nic and be me (don't know who would want to).
A kind of find it a little annoying that sometimes my browser can't display the page from time to time, and when I refresh I have to re-log in. And there is a little lag from when people type.
But the good thing is, it looks like I'm just surfing the net, and not chatting. Also, we can look at the forum, what's playing, and everything else at the sametime.
Though, on my Macintosh, it looks a little bit weird, as compared to the PC I have. But other than that, I just wanted to voice my thoughts. Sorry for those that disagrees with me.
