LAKESHORE RECORDS TO RELEASE THE LEAST AMONG YOU
Composer Mark Kilian’s Original Score To Be Released on August 24th
(August 17, 2010- Los Angeles, CA) – Lakeshore Records will release the THE LEAST AMONG YOU -- Original Motion Picture Soundtrack available digitally on August 24, 2010. Mark Kilian (Tsotsi, La Mission) composed the original music for the feature film debut of writer/director Mark Young. The film, which is based on a true story, earned star Cedric Sanders an NAACP Best Actor Award for his portrayal of Richard Kelly.
South African born Mark Kilian started his music career as a jazz pianist working in and around his homeland. He played with the Brubecks, Shirley Bassey, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Airto Moreira and many local jazz and rock outfits and also played a lot of musical theater. However, after setting his sights on film music, he attended USC’s graduate program “Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television.” He started working in the business immediately after graduation, writing, orchestrating, conducting and programming on movies like The Matrix: Reloaded, Species, Copycat and The Animatrix. He also wrote countless high profile TV commercials for Apple, Coke, Amex, Toyota and Microsoft.
Mark composed his first score in 1997 and since then has written many, most notably Tsotsi which won the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 2005. His most recent film is The Ward with legendary horror director John Carpenter. Others include Rendition, Traitor, La Mission, Before the Rains and Legacy.
Following his false arrest during the 1965 Watts riots, Richard Kelly (Cedric Sanders) must serve a two-semester probation at an all-white seminary. Inspired by a true story, the school’s first black student is welcomed by its progressive president Alan Beckett (William Devane). But Richard soon learns that the school wants black followers, not leaders. Even former missionary, Kate Allison (Lauren Holly), rejects him. Facing a decision that will land him in prison, Richard meets Samuel Benton (Louis Gossett, Jr.), an elderly janitor who lives in the basement of Richard’s dormitory. As Samuel guides Richard through the trials of racism and personal demons, Richard has to choose between his dreams and his destiny.
“The story of Richard is in many ways an internal and lonely journey. He has Samuel to guide him along and he has his faith, but he is essentially carving out a new experience for African Americans at this college in this time period,” said Kilian. “So musically I wanted to capture the isolation and loneliness by using an ensemble of 'little' instruments that bring a more introspective aspect to Richard's journey.”
To achieve that vision, Killian choice instruments from all over the world. He combined them with gospel organ, fiddle, oboe, strings, horn and gospel choir to, as he describes, “create a score that is of the story but is not literally linked to the events in it. The score is more concerned with playing the message of the story which is a universal one.”
Witenuckle Films presents THE LEAST AMONG YOU, will be released on DVD on August 24, 2010. THE LEAST AMONG YOU – Original Motion Picture Score on Lakeshore Records will be released digitally on August 24, 2010.
