FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LAKESHORE RECORDS TO RELEASE THE SOUNDTRACK FOR WONDERFUL WORLD
Soundtrack Features Original Music by Craig Richey
(June 8, 2011- Los Angeles, CA) – Lakeshore Records will release the Wonderful World -- Original Motion Picture Soundtrack available digitally on June 14, 2011. The soundtrack features original music by Craig Richey (The Gymnast, Greenlit).
A native of North Carolina, Craig Richey graduated from the Juilliard School of Music. He began scoring films in New York. His first score, When It’s Over, won critical praise. FilmS he has scored since relocating to Los Angeles include Lovely & Amazing, Friends With Money, The Gymnast, The King of Kong, Gardens of the Night, Wonderful World, The September Issue, A Marine Story, Greenlit, and Answers to Nothing.
Craig is a Sundance Composer’s Lab Fellow, invited to participate in the 2006 Sundance Institute, and has appeared on BMI’s Composers Round Table at the Sundance Film Festival on several occasions. His score to Greenlit, a documentary about ‘greening’ a Hollywood film production, features instruments that he fashioned out of garbage and recycled materials found at home. Also a singer-songwriter, Richey’s songs have appeared both in the films and on the soundtracks for Lovely & Amazing, Friends With Money, The King of Kong, Greenlit, and Answers to Nothing.
A bittersweet comedy about families, friends and a frivolous fight against corporate institutions, Matthew Broderick plays Ben Singer, a failed children's folk singer, a newly unemployed proofreader and an every-other-weekend dad to his young daughter (Jodelle Ferland), who prefers pretty much anything to listening to her dad's pessimistic ramblings.
Struggling in all aspects of his life, Ben's only comforts come from smoking marijuana alone and regular chess games with his smart and opinionated Senegalese roommate Ibou (Michael Kenneth Williams). When Ibou is suddenly struck ill and an insensitive municipal employee exacerbates the emergency situation, Ben pours his energy into a lawsuit against the city for depraved indifference. Ben's life begins to turn around with the arrival of Ibou's beautiful and sexy sister Khadi (Sanaa Lathan) from Senegal, who moves into Ibou's room in Ben's apartment. As Ben suspects that it is his own cynicism corroding the beauty around him, he realizes that it's all a matter of perspective.
“I was intrigued that the film centered around a character whose life is changed by the people and the lore of Senegal,” said Richey. “In keeping with that, although I felt the score should have no idiomatic nod to the music of Senegal, I did feel that the presence of some African instruments would be wonderful, just using their sounds mixed in with the traditional instruments to add a unique flavor to the score.”
To achieve this, Richey used instruments including the kalimba, the kora and a bamboo sax. He said, “The film has a wonderful sense of magic that was immediately inspiring, mixed in with a sense of whimsy, melancholy, humor and a tender heart. All delicious elements to any composer!”
Magnolia Pictures presents Wonderful World currently available on DVD and Blu-Ray. Wonderful World – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack on Lakeshore Records will be released digitally on June 14, 2011.
