FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SCREAMWORKS RECORDS LATEST RELEASE IS HEARTLESS

The New Division of Moviescore Media To Release Score by David Julyan

(June 17, 2011- New York, NY) –Screamworks Records, a new division of Moviescore Media dedicated to releasing horror film music, is releasing its third offering, David Julyan’s score for Heartless. Julyan (Memento, The Descent) combines his signature mix of emotional string writing with electronic layers for the score to Philip Ridley’s multiple award-winning film.

David Julyan began writing music for short films whilst studying at University College London. It was here that David first collaborated with director Christopher Nolan and in 1998 scored Nolan's first feature Following. Shot with little money on weekends over a six-month period, Following went on to become an unexpected Indie hit. His work is best known through their later collaborations Memento, Insomnia and The Prestige. The later two helping to cement David's style for seamlessly blending orchestra with atmospheric electronics, to produce subtle and brooding scores.

Subtlety was put aside for the score to Neil Marshall's horror film The Descent giving Julyan the opportunity to create one of his biggest works to date, with it's dramatic use of orchestra and choir. Although best known for his dark and atmospheric scores that blend orchestra and electronics, Julyan has also scored films like the heart-warming Irish drama Inside I'm Dancing. His recent work includes Eden Lake, The Descent Part 2, and the Drew Goddard / Joss Whedon film The Cabin In The Woods, due for release in 2011.

Jim Sturgess (21, Across the Universe) leads a hugely-talented ensemble cast in this sublime British psychological thriller from cult UK director Philip Ridley (The Reflecting Skin, The Passion of Darkly Noon), who returns to the screen after a 14-year absence.

The film follows Jamie Morgan (Sturgess), born with a disfiguring birthmark across his face, which leaves him an outcast in rough East London. While wandering abandoned yards taking photographs, he comes across a gang of thugs and soon discovers that they are something other than human. He then is led into a Faustian deal that will see him become a party to the terrifying chaos around him. Part Donnie Darko, part Guillermo del Toro, this dark urban tale takes its audience to the darkest and most violent corners of the human heart.

The film also stars Clémence Poésy, Noel Clarke, Joseph Mawle, Eddie Marsan, Luke Treadaway and Timothy Spall, and was produced by Pippa Cross and Richard Raymond. The film recently won the Best Independent Film Award at the Toronto After Dark Festival.

“The director wanted to avoid the flashbacks to the dad being creepy, none of the tension from the rest of the score was appropriate there – these were about Jamie’s loss and love for his father, his recalling of happier times,” Julyan says. “I wanted the score to take us on Jamie’s personal journey, his search for happiness.”

Heartless doesn’t feature any big horror motifs. He described, “I wanted the sparseness to the theme for Demons In The Dark, the sense of isolation of a city at night. We wanted an intimate score so decided to use only an ensemble of eight strings.”

Another function of the score was to provide pulse to the storytelling and pacing. “One of the main elements is what I call a ticking clock, lots of electronic percussion with long delays on it,” he said. “We wanted to subtly drive the movie forward and also give a sense of time running out.”

IFC Films presents Heartless now available on DVD. Heartless (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) from Screamworks Records will be available digitally on June 21 and on CD on June 28, 2011. Also available from Screamworks Records is Jeff Grace’s score for Stake Land and Nathaniel Levisay’s Dawning. Future releases will include The Man Who Collected Food (Daniel Alcheh), The Shrine (Ryan Shore) and The Prestige (Conrad Pope).
