Oliver & Company
Disney animated film from 1988 – and one of the few Disney soundtracks available on CD that's somehow not yet included in the SST db! Movie plot is loosely based on the classic Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist, though with changes: relocated to NYC, updated to a contemporary setting, and (since this is Disney) turning the main characters into cats & dogs. The CD release is a mixed soundtrack, with half being ambient score (by J.A.C. Redford, according to IMDb) and the other half being pop tracks. (My memory is rusty, but I believe this film marks the beginning of their new era, the "contemporary music" approach which was a startling first for the studio at that time – this was 3 years before B&B!)
Featured pop songs from more recent Disney STs are nothing unusual to the SST catalog, though this does have rather more than those. In all honesty I could skip a couple of the ones here, but that is just my personal preference, and as far as I can recall they were all original/native compositions for this movie, not simply "used" for a soundtrack. At any rate, I would urge keeping at least these two, the second one particularly:
-- "Once Upon a Time in New York City" (the film's opening number, written by Brill alum Barry Mann & sung by Huey Lewis, who of course is already in the db for Back to the Future)
-- "Why Should I Worry?" (perf. by Billy Joel, who actually voiced a lead character in the movie - this song was the main theme used in trailers & promos at the time, and the one people are mostly likely to know/associate with the movie. It was also Golden Globe-nominated for Best Original Song that year.)
Unfortunately, the Amazon page does not offer any audio samples. However, I have found a video clip at IMDb which features part of the main theme, and I've linked that above. I'm not sure where else to search for (legit) samples of the other tracks... but if anyone else knows, please do post an additional link! |
