French Fries Get New Name in Congress
Tue Mar 11, 1:57 PM ET Add Politics - U. S. Congress to My Yahoo!

By JIM ABRAMS, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Show the flag and pass the ketchup was the order of the day in House cafeterias Tuesday. Lawmakers struck a lunchtime blow against the French and put "freedom fries" on the menu.

More here...

btw : did I already point out to you that French fries are a Belgian specialty? there's nothing remotely french about them.

I think this is probably the stupidest thing I have ever seen. it started about 3 - 4 weeks ago around here. This one resturaunt also removed all French foods and wines from the menu. Absolutely ridiculous if you ask me. All because France is not bowing into line behind Bush over Iraq. Ugggh!

FYI - This stuff actually started around World War I. They renamed the "hamburger" the "freedom burger." Why? Becasue the name was to close to Hamburg, Germany. Lots of this type of references date back to WWI & WWII.

I'm surprised the hamburger isn't a freedom burger now... iirc Germany is against war too now.

Next on the list are freedom waffles, and freedom beer!

But then there's also the Mecca-Cola, Arab-Cola and Muslim-Up. Although these are actually real brands. "Stop drinking like an idiot, drink with commitment" is the sales pitch. I don't know... I guess you could say that drinking pop is drinking like an idiot, whether the bottle says "made in Iran" or not. Water is a lot more healthy after all. Well, usually...

Which is stupid, because the entire word 'hamburger' is german. It means no more than 'meat from hamburg'. Same like other types of meat: frankfurter, wiener, ...

So basically if they wanted to change the name hamburger, they should by right have called it freedom... or freedom meat.

Good point Slowmo.

How bout they call it a 'beef on a bun'. And as for 'freedom fries', why don't they just call them potato sticks. And instead of 'freedom toast' call it fried toast, or egg toast.

I think this whole thing is silly. And since the alternate names above aren't very good I am still eating hamburgers, french fries, and french toast (Mmmmmmm).

Getting worse :

WASHINGTON -- First it was french fries and french toast. Now the bones of U.S. servicemen are being dragged into the conflict between France and the United States over war in Iraq.

Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite, R-Brooksville, plans to introduce a bill today proposing that the families of the thousands of soldiers, sailors and airmen buried in France and Belgium be allowed to dig up their remains and have them shipped home.

That is soooooo ridiculous!

Not only ridiculous but rude. We are not going to change France's mind by 'boycotting' the word french and french wines. And it is an insult to suggest we dig up our dead soldiers.

Did all of our reps take stupid pills for lunch along with their freedom fries?

Personally, SlowMo, I think that families should always be allowed to dig up the remains of their perished loved ones and transport them around to wherever they want. That way, Grandma can keep coming with you to those yearly Nova Scotia vacations the family loves so much!

AHHH finally the start of somthing great. Ladies and gentlemen this is just the begining. soon no more french will be taught in schools. And any french here in America. Well looks like they have to go to the camps. or be kicked out. Shit while we are at it we could kick out the germans. and any russians. ....

25 years later. The United states of America is renamed to #asgf%gh% WHICH TRANSLATES into MYLAND. The poulation is at about 100. not counting some Indians. The country which was once a "melting pot" of cultures is now a barren waste land.

(voice) how did this happen?

Well it all started before the Gulf War 2. We had people who didn't want to fight along side with us. So the leaders decided to take out, and get rid of anything that could have been learned or associated with them. It started with only a few other countries. but it snowballed into this. A country with its own unique language, and food....

Sorry about that. I got carried away. [Big Grin]
