The International Film Music Festival Comes to Málaga With the Introduction of MOSMA - Movie Score Málaga

The Festival, Now Organized by the Festival de Málaga, Will Feature Seven Concerts, Round-table Discussions, Panels, Tutorials, and the Presentation of the MOSMA Awards.

(Malaga, Spain, June 16, 2016) - Festival de Málaga is proud to announce the first edition of MOSMA (Movie Score Málaga) at a press conference last week. Participating in the announcement of MOSMA were Gemma del Corral, City Councilor for Culture; Juan Antonio Vigar, Director of the Festival de Málaga and MOSMA; David Doncel, Coordinator of Content for MOSMA; and Arturo Díez Boscovich, Musical Director of MOSMA.

From 29th June to 3rd July, MOSMA will be dedicated to music for visual media, music which impacts our collective imagination daily through television, video games and the big screen. MOSMA aims to be an international meeting point for both experienced composers and young talent alike.

Guests for this first edition of the festival in its new location will include Craig Armstrong (Far From the Madding Crowd, Moulin Rouge), Jan A. P. Kaczmarek (Finding Neverland), Roque Baños (In The Heart of the Sea), Sean Callery (TV’s 24, Homeland), Kenji Kawai (Ranma, Ringu), Pino Donaggio (Carrie) and Federico Jusid (Neruda, TV’s Carlos, Rey Emperador).

One of MOSMA's main objectives is to promote soundtrack recordings to new audiences while simultaneously satisfying longtime devotees of the genre. Four large concerts will be held in the Cervantes and Echegaray theaters, dedicated to international composers from these worlds of film and television music. MOSMA will also be taking music out onto the streets as smaller format ensemble concerts performing some of the best-known pieces from the history of cinema. These concerts will be free to the public and will take place at Muelle Uno and in Calle Alcazabilla.

On Wednesday 29th June, in the Teatro Cervantes, the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by maestro Pablo Urbina and maestro Arturo Díez Boscovich, will perform the music of the late Michael Kamen. The family of this prestigious composer will be on hand and be presented a special recognition in honor of his long career.

During the closing concert on Saturday July 2nd in the Teatro Cervantes, the MOSMA Awards will be presented to recognize the most outstanding composers of the year. There will be a concert of this music performed by the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ziryab Choir, conducted by the maestro Díez Boscovich.

MOSMA has several chapters of the festival, each dedicated to one of the festival guests: MOSMA HONORED dedicated to the family of Michael Kamen (Mr. Holland’s Opus), MOSMA SCREEN TV to Sean Callery, MOSMA HOMELAND to Roque Baños, MOSMA PREMIERE to Federico Jusid, MOSMA MAESTRO to Jan A. P. Kaczmarek, MOSMA DISTANT WORLDS to Kenji Kawai, MOSMA VINTAGE to Pino Donaggio and MOSMA MAIN THEME to Craig Armstrong.

In addition MOSMA will be the home of the Jerry Goldsmith Awards that BSOSpirit presents for the best up-and-coming composers. These awards will be given during a ceremony on the night of July 1 at 10.30pm on the terrace of the Colección del Museo Ruso de San Petersburgo / Málaga.

Individual tickets for the concerts are priced between 15 and 24 euros and are on sale at the the box offices of the Cervantes and Echegaray theatres, the Cine Albéniz, and from Uniticket (www.unientradas.es).

Also available through these channels is a festival pass offering admission to all four concerts for 60 euros, a discount of approximately 20% on the total price of tickets.

CRAIG ARMSTRONG
Born in 1959 in Glasgow, Craig Armstrong trained at the Royal Academy of Music in London. On his return to Glasgow, Armstrong became in-house composer at the influential Tron Theatre. His early work, scoring for theatrical productions such as Michael Boyd’s radical 1993 interpretation of Macbeth, laid the foundations for a spectacular career in film.

Since the mid-’90s, he has created scores for both Hollywood and independent films, from Peter Mullan’s The Close Trilogy to BAFTA, Golden Globe and Novello award-winning soundtracks for Baz Luhrmann’s William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge! Many more films have benefited from Armstrong’s expert touch, including Richard Curtis’s Love Actually, Taylor Hackford’s Oscar-winning biopic Ray and Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk. Armstrong has composed three scores for Oliver Stone: World Trade Center, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and the 2015 documentary TV series Untold History of the United States. In 2013, he collaborated with Baz Luhrmann on their third feature film together, The Great Gatsby, for which Armstrong’s score was awarded an AACTA (Best Original Music Score award) and received a Grammy nomination. Most recently, his scoring talents can be heard in the feature films Victor Frankenstein and Far from the Madding Crowd. Upcoming film projects include Snowden, his fourth collaboration with Oliver Stone.

Alongside his scoring work, Armstrong has built an impressive repertoire of both popular and classical music. He collaborated with trip-hop outfit Massive Attack on the platinum-selling Protection, and his talents for arranging, remixing and composition have been called upon by names as diverse as the London Sinfonietta, Yoko Ono, the Barbican and Sakamoto.
Armstrong’s orchestral works include Gesualdo, an operetta commissioned by Scottish Opera, and acclaimed pieces for the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Cappella Nova and violinist Clio Gould. In 2012 Armstrong received a Herald Angel award for a new Scottish Opera commission The Lady from the Sea, which premiered at the Edinburgh International Festival. His solo albums include the collaborative As If to Nothing (2002) and 2004’s Piano Works. Armstrong’s third studio album It’s Nearly Tomorrow was released in 2014 on BMG Chrysalis. In 2010 he accepted an OBE at the Palace of Holyroodhouse for his contribution to music.


FEDERICO JUSID
Federico Jusid is a Spanish composer, born in Buenos Aires, who resides and works between Madrid and Los Angeles. He has written the scores for more than 30 feature films and over 15 television series. His work includes the score for the Academy Award®-winner for Best Foreign Film THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES (2009, Dir. by Juan José Campanella), for which he received the nomination for the Spanish Academy Goya Award® for Best Original Score.

He has recently worked with Alberto Iglesias writing additional compositions for the original score of Ridley Scott´s EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS, and he has also composed the soundtrack for KIDNAP (Luis Prieto) with Halle Berry, to be released later this year, and HAPPY 140 (Gracia Querejeta). Other notable scores include THE LIFE UNEXPECTED (Jorge Torregrossa), EVERYBODY HAS A PLAN (Anna Piterbarg), THE ESCAPE (Eduardo Mignogna), THE HIDDEN FACE (Andrés Baiz), I WANT TO BE YOUR SOLDIER (Christian Molina), and more recently THE IGNORANCE OF BLOOD (Manuel Gómez Pereira) or BETIBU (Miguel Cohan).

On television, his most recognized work is the soundtrack for the Spanish historical drama ISABEL, MY QUEEN with whom he won several awards, such as International Film Music Critics Association (IFMCA) Award and Reel Music Award. In 2015 he made the score for the TV series UNDER SUSPICION and THE REFUGEES (co-production with BBC International) and prepared the original score of CHARLES, KING EMPEROR, sequel to ISABEL, MY QUEEN. He has also composed works for concert hall for various chamber ensembles, choir and soloists.


JAN A. P. KACZMAREK
Jan A. P. Kaczmarek is a composer with a tremendous international reputation that continues to grow. As a successful recording artist and touring musician, Jan turned to composing film scores as his primary occupation.

Jan's first success in the United States came in theater. After composing striking scores for productions at Chicago's Goodman Theatre and Los Angeles' Mark Taper Forum, Jan won an Obie and a Drama Desk Award for his music for the New York Shakespeare Festival's 1992 production of John Ford's "Tis Pity She's A Whore," directed by JoAnne Akalaitis, starring Val Kilmer and Jeanne Tripplehorn. Newsday wrote that Jan's score "undulates with hypnotic force that gets under your skin," while Frank Rich of the New York Times found it worthy of the films of Bernardo Bertolucci and Luchino Visconti. Educated as a lawyer, he abandoned his planned career as a diplomat, for political reasons, to write music in order to finally gain freedom of expression. First he composed for the highly politicized underground theater, and then for a mini-orchestra of his own creation, "The Orchestra of the Eighth Day". The major turning point in his life, he says, was a period of intense study with avant-garde theater director, Jerzy Grotowski.

Jan returned to America in 1989 to find a label for his latest composition for the Orchestra. Jan stayed in the United States where he expanded his horizons by composing for theater as he had already done in Poland with great success, capped by two prestigious New York theater awards in 1992. Having also composed music for films in Poland, he focused his attention to that medium, achieving recognition as a film composer with scores to such films as Total Eclipse, Bliss, Washington Square, Aimée & Jaguar, The Third Miracle, Lost Souls, Edges of the Lord, Quo Vadis and Adrian Lyne's Unfaithful.

February 2005, Jan won his first Oscar for Best Original Score on Marc Forster's highly acclaimed film, Finding Neverland. J.A.P.K. also won The National Review Board's award for Best Score of the Year, and was nominated for both a Golden Globe and BAFTA's Anthony Asquith Award for Achievement in Film Music. In addition to his work in films, Jan was commissioned to write two symphonic and choral pieces for two important national occasions in Poland Cantata for Freedom to celebrate 25th anniversary of Solidarity movement, and oratorio 1956 to commemorate 50th anniversary of bloody uprising against totalitarian government in Poznan, Poland. Both premiers were broadcast live on national television. Jan is also setting up an Institute inspired by the Sundance Institute, in his home country of Poland, as a European center for development of new work in the areas of film, theatre, music and new media.

KENJI KAWAI
Born in Tokyo, after his studies in Tokai, Kenji Kawai began to study music in the prestigious Sobi academy. However he soon left his studies there to created the band Muse with friends, playing rock fusion and participating in several music competitions. After leaving Muse, Kenji Kawai started to compose music for advertising from the studio in his home. During the recording of music for a radio program he met the musical director Naoko Asari who encouraged him to compose scores for Japanese animation. From that point he began to compose for legendary Anime series such as Ranma, Devilman, Mobile Suite Gundam and Patlabor. To date he has composed more than 200 soundtracks for Japanese Animation.

Kawai has also composed big pieces for films including the horror films Ringu and Dark Water, the martial arts saga Yip Man and Qi Jian, as well as live action adaptations of world-renowned anime films such as Death Note and Gantz. In addition, he has collaborated with the genius Mamoru Oshii, the visionary Japanese filmmaker for films like the world-acclaimed saga Ghost in the Shell and for the feature films Avalon and The Sky Crawlers.

MICHAEL KAMEN
(New York, 15th April 1948 - London, 18th November 2003). Kamen was an American composer, arranger, songwriter and session musician. He was born in the city of New York and studied at the New York High School of Music & Art, followed by Juilliard School for Music, Dance and Drama, where he learned to play the oboe. He worked briefly with Leonard Bernstein, after performing with his rock group in one of Bernstein's concerts for young people.

Highlights of his career include his collaborations with Pink Floyd, David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Metallica (in the recording and production of S&M, for which he conducted the San Francisco Symphony), Herbie Hancock and Bryan Adams. Kamen wrote eleven ballets and diverse concert pieces, among which can be found a concert for saxophone, which was performed by David Sanborn.

However he was best-known for his compositions for films, and was the author of the scores for The Dead Zone, Brazil, Highlander, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Crusoe, Licence to Kill and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, as well as for the series of films Lethal Weapon and Die Hard. He received two Oscar nominations and won three Grammy awards, two Golden Globes, two Ivor Novello awards, an Annie and an Emmy.

In 2003 Kamen died of a heart attack, leaving behind an incredible list of work, including the film The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero, The Three Musketeers, Don Juan DeMarco, Mr. Holland's Opus, Jack, 101 Dalmatians, The Winter Guest, What Dreams May Come, The Iron Giant, X-Men and Open Range as well as the TV series From the Earth to the Moon and Band of Brothers.

PINO DONAGGIO
Born in Burano on 24th November 1941, Donaggio began to study the violin at the age of ten, first at ‘Benedetto Marcello’ in Venice and later at the ‘Giuseppe Verdi’ conservatory in Milan. At 14 he performed as a soloist in a Vivaldi concert for Italian radio and later played with Solisti Veneti and Solisti di Milano. In the summer of '59 Donaggio launched himself as a singer with one of Paul Anka's songs. He immediately began to write songs, participating in the Sanremo Music Festival with 'Come Sinfonia'. Hits such as Il Cane di Stoffa followed and, above all, in '65, the famous Lo Che Non Vivo, a song that sold 60 million records worldwide, with versions entitled You Don't Have to Say You Love Me, by Dusty Springfield and Elvis Presley.

His debut in film music arrived almost by accident in 1973, with the composition of the soundtrack for Don't Look Now. In 1976 Brian De Palma, heard the album Don’t Look Now and was fascinated by the composition. De Palma entrusted the task of composing the soundtrack for Carrie to Donaggio, which brought huge international success to the Venetian musician. Dressed to Kill and Blow Out consolidated the De Palma-Donaggio duo.

In the mid '80s Donaggio decided to compose principally in Italy. Together with L'attenzione, this period was highlighted by successful films like Nothing Left to Do but Cry, and Don Camilo. Among Donaggio's extensive filmography includes films such as Piranha and The Howling by Joe Dante; Body Double by Brian De Palma; The Barbarians, 7 chili in 7 giorni by Luca Verdone; Sotto il vestito niente and Raising Cain also by De Palma; Giovanni Falcone by Giuseppe Ferrara; Trauma by Dario Argento; Un eroe borghese by Michele Plácido, and Never Talk to Strangers by Peter Hall. His most recent work includes Do You Like Hitchcock? By Dario Argento; Antonio Warrior of God by Antonello Belluco; Winter in Wartime by Martin Koolhoven; Sissi by Xaver Schwarzenberger; Passion by Brian De Palma; Patrick by Mark Hartley; and La Buca by Daniele Cipri

ROQUE BAÑOS
Roque Baños was born in Jumilla (Murcia) in 1968. He began his musical education at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Murcia where he finished elementary level, specializing in saxophone, obtaining Honors in both Music Theory and in Saxophone. In 1986, he moved to Madrid, completing his studies at the Madrid Royal Conservatory of Music and then received a grant from the Ministry of Culture, in 1993 he moved to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music, majoring in Music Composition for Film and Jazz.

Since 1998 when he scored his first film SECONDARY ROADS directed by Emilio Martinez Lazaro, he has worked with Spain's most renowned directors such as Alex de la Iglesia, Daniel Monzon, Carlos Saura, Emilio Martinez Lazaro, and Santiago Segura to name a few, and other internationally acclaimed directors such as Jonathan Glazer, Brad Anderson, Marcelo Piñeyro or Gerard Junot amongst others.

Among his recent works are EVIL DEAD directed by Fede Alvarez, and produced by Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi, and OLDBOY by Spike Lee. His latest films are HEART OF THE SEA, directed by Ron Howard (premiering December 2015), and RISEN from Kevin Reynolds.

SEAN CALLERY
Callery was born in Hartford, Connecticut and grew up in Bristol, Rhode Island. He studied at the New England Conservatory where he earned a degree in piano performance in 1987. That same year, Callery moved to Los Angeles to work for New England Digital, the creators of the Synclavier synthesizer.

In 1990, together with John Farrar, he wrote the score for the NBC television film A Mom for Christmas. He worked as a sound designer for the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which led to an Emmy nomination. In 1996 Callery was contracted to compose the music for the series Nikita, which was broadcast for five seasons between 1997 and 2001.

Callery collaborated with the TV producer Joel Surnow in the television series 24, from 2001 to 2010. He received three Emmy awards for his work in the series, for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score), in 2003, 2006 and 2010. He also won the Film & TV Music Award in 2007 for the best composition for a television drama and Top Television Series. In addition to his work for 24, Callery has composed the music for television series such as Medium (from 2005 to 2010), all the episodes of Shark and for the series Bones since its fourth season.

In 2011 he created the music for the mini-series The Kennedys and Kiefer Sutherland's web series The Confession. In December 2011 he again collaborated with the executive film producer Howard Gordon, with whom he had worked on 24, for the series Homeland. In 2012 he composed the main theme for the CBS series Elementary. In 2014 he put music to the ninth season of 24, 24: Live Another Day. In 2015 he composed the music for Marvel's new series Jessica Jones for Netflix.
