Sony Classical and Madison Gate Records Release
FENCES - ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

Available December 16
Score by Composer Marcelo Zarvos

Sony Classical and Madison Gate Records proudly announce the release of FENCES (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), featuring music by Marcelos Zarvos. The soundtrack will be available digitally on December 16 and on CD December 23. The film arrives in theatres on December 25, 2016.

Fences is the story of Troy Maxson, a mid-century Pittsburgh sanitation worker who once dreamed of a baseball career, but was too old when the major leagues began admitting black players. He tries to be a good husband and father, but his lost dream of glory eats at him, and causes him to make a decision that threatens to tear his family apart.

Fences is directed by Denzel Washington from a screenplay by August Wilson, adapted from Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. The film stars Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Jovan Adepo, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson, and Saniyya Sidney. The film is produced by Scott Rudin, Denzel Washington and Todd Black.

Of the score, composer Marcelos Zarvos says, “In Fences, my goal was to create a score that enhanced the film's moving and powerful performances while navigating the wonderful dialogue of August Wilson's timeless and universal script. The score featured the piano as its main melodic voice in addition to a full orchestra of strings, winds, a solo trumpet and harp. Denzel Washington’s deep command of the material as both director and actor informed the composition process every step of the way.

As Denzel Washington pointed out several times, our first and most important challenge was to imagine and carve out the right space for our score since there wasn’t any in the original play. In his own words we all had to be as good as August Wilson, music included. I found that high register elements such as soft violins and violas worked best under both Denzel Washington and Viola Davis’ rich dialogue. Another great source of inspiration was the character of Gabriel who acts as the motivator for the very first (Gabe Walks Away) and last of the score cues (Gabriel’s Trumpet/ Ending). I believe the spiritual connotation of Gabriel’s name and the fact that he played the trumpet was a clue from August Wilson as to both the metaphysical nature of Gabriel’s character and also of music itself."

ABOUT MARCELO ZARVOS
The subtle nuances of composer Marcelo Zarvos’ style are evidenced in his recent scores for Golden Globe-winning THE AFFAIR and RAY DONOVAN. Though his training began by studying classical music he later began delving into jazz, rock and world music. This expansion of influence helped to create Zarvos’ trademark sound – a seamless blend of classical, orchestral, rock, electronic and various ethnic elements, that together create uniquely affecting and emotionally charged music for film, TV, modern dance and the concert stage.

Because of his skill with layered stories and emotive undertones, Brazilian-born Zarvos has become the go-to composer for filmmakers like Nicole Holofcener (ENOUGH SAID, PLEASE GIVE, the recent Amazon series ONE MISSISSIPPI), Antoine Fuqua (BROOKLYN’S FINEST), Tod Williams (THE DOOR IN THE FLOOR, CELL), Ross Katz (ADULT BEGINNERS, THE CHOICE), Cary Fukunaga (SIN NOMBRE) and Barry Levinson (THE HUMBLING, YOU DON’T KNOW JACK, ROCK THE KASBAH).

A classically trained pianist and composer, Zarvos earned his BFA from Cal Arts. He burst onto the film landscape in the early 2000s with his score for KISSING JESSICA STEIN and with the film adaptation of the John Irving novel, THE DOOR IN THE FLOOR. Splitting time between the New York independent film scene, Hollywood productions, World and European Cinema, Zarvos’ credits include THE GOOD SHEPHERD, THE WORDS, BROOKLYN’S FINEST, THE FACE OF LOVE, REACHING FOR THE MOON (FLORES RARAS), SIN NOMBRE, HOLLYWOODLAND, ADULT BEGINNERS, THE HUMBLING, LITTLE ACCIDENTS, AMERICAN ULTRA and ENOUGH SAID.

Twice nominated for Primetime Emmy® Awards (for YOU DON’T KNOW JACK and TAKING CHANCE), Zarvos’ television work includes TOO BIG TO FAIL, THE BIG C, EXTANT the HBO movie PHIL SPECTOR, the Amazon series ONE MISSISSIPPI and two current Showtime series THE AFFAIR and RAY DONOVAN.

Zarvos’ recent projects include the adaptation of the John le Carré novel OUR KIND OF TRAITOR (starring Ewan Mcgregor and Damian Lewis), ROCK THE KASBAH (directed by Barry Levinson, with a cast including Bruce Willis, Kate Hudson and Bill Murray), THE CHOICE (based on the Nicholas Sparks novel), and the sci-fi thriller CELL (starring Samuel L. Jackson and John Cusack).
