Fri May 30, 2003 5:32 am Post subject: What the hell is up with the Stream? Well I'll tell yeh! |
|
Do you kids like rollercoasters?! Cause I sure do! Up down and all around? Well then you should really love the streams recently. Weeeee!
But don't you worry dear listeners 'cause the Cocmeister's here to take us all on a magical journey I call:
"Cocles' and Friends Awesomely Sweet Adventures Through Streamland"
Remember a little over a month ago when we had big-honkin' loads of bandwidth and lots of streams?
Yeah so do I. That ruled.
The Low-End streams for the kids on computers from 15 years ago were run by Trinity and T2. Too royally sweet companies that donate their bandwidth for our pretty little ears.
The one 128K stream however (and the 56k I believe) were donated and hosted by a company called InformationWaveTechnologies. Now while InformationWave was very generous, their servers were about as stable as a Mexican Skyscraper.
With the 128's going down like a cheap hooker at the drop of a dime, King Jeric the Nifty had finally had enough and told InformationWave to get lost.
Digging into SST's monetary reserves Jeric went and bought a number of 128 streams from a company called internetradio.nu. 12 days later, they still had SST's money, we had no streams and they weren't answering their phone nor replying to our emails.
With SST's money tied up with these wankers, we were screwed like a one-armed man in a clapping contest.
Then happy days returned. Lionshaq swooped down like the Roman God of Bandwidth, offered his services and Presto Prestissimo, we had our streams back! And .Nu finally refunded SST's money. Yay!
With some free cash once again, Jeric upgraded his server to a faster CPU and added some RAM.
Then about a week ago something great happened. The newest version of SAM2 was released. A version that would finally support MP3Pro, WMA9 and at last my beloved Ogg Vorbis. Sweetness in a Spray-Can, turkey.
For those of you who don't know the process, I'll explain: Yeah I'm being nice... shut up.
Jeric's tracks are stored on a hard-drive on Jeric's server located somewhere in his house that probably takes up space that BQ has a much better idea for.... like a breakfast nook.
SST's stream is played off of Jeric's server and sent over his modem to the stream providers (LionShaQ, Trinity and T2), who then relay the signal to all of us.
This initial stream sent off of Jeric's server is made possible thanks to a happy-fun virtually one of a kind program called SAM. It powers the queue, the playlist the request system and yes, the stream itself. When we're not making requests it's good ol' SAM acting as DJ and selecting Transformers.... again.
And now dear readers I ask that you send the children outside or to bed, 'cause here's where it all went boom.
Within days of all these improvements the listeners of SST suddenly found themselves facing 6 hours of the theme from "Deep Throat", my porno CD being put to good use.
The source of the problem was simple, SAM was freezing on Jeric's server like an arctic nudist colony.
But what could be causing it? The hardware upgrade made only a few days before? The newest version of SAM? Both? Something else? ARGH!? I want my SST!
Contacting our boys at SpacialAudio (the makers of SAM) Jeric quickly learned that the newest version would crash in WindowsXP. A patch would be released in the next 24 hours.
Jeric immediately reverted back to the older version, went to bed, and SAM crashed excactly one minute later.
As it stands now, we're still waiting on that patch and Jeric's going to format the server and rebuild it from scratch. If this doesn't fix it we'll possibly next be trading in the RAM or the new CPU with replacements since one of them's likely defective.
So sit tight, cause Jeric's not leaning back and shrugging. The signal will be back up and stable as soon as possible.
Your reward for waiting?
We'll be adding Ogg.

Your clarity and your patience in explaining all of that is greatly appreciated. I hope you (and by you I mean mostly Jeric) can solve the hardware issues (if that is the problem). I would suggest that you ride the folks over at SpecialAudioto get thier asses in gear on that patch.
In the meantime... We will all try to be patient and ride through the rollercoaster of music that the site is going through. Us older members have been through worse and are still here.
Keep us posted and we are in your debt for all eternity. (not really but it does sound good) _________________ A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day. - Calvin and Hobbes - |

It seems it's probably not faulty hardware, as the server itself has stabilized and it's now only SAM itself that's crashing.
3 versions of SAM2:
1. SAM2 RC2
This is the original version of SAM2 we started with when the PHP Conversion happened (prior to that we were using SAM 1.3 (which is no longer supported)).
2. SAM2 RC2c
This is a more advanced version of RC2 and a test precursor for RC3. I was able to acquire for the site so we could run Ogg and MP3Pro. We used this version for a couple weeks until RC3 was officially released.
3. SAM2 RC3
This is the newest version of SAM2. With everything fully integrated and supported. This is also the one doesn't like Windows XP very much.
Jeric has dropped back to using RC2c for the time being, so we still have MP3Pro capability on the lower end streams.
We could of course drop even further back to SAM2 RC2, and lose MP3Pro, but at this point, with all the version jumping, Jeric's going to format and start anew. We weren't having these problems when RC2c was initially installed, so we're probably dealing with some faulty remnant of RC3. |

Sorry everyone. I thought things we're going to get better but unfortunately the bug comes days after installing SAM2. The only way of know everything is fine is to wait. I just want to let everyone know that I am doing everything possible to get the station stable again. _________________ "Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? I read that 4-day-old post. It doesn't say anything about the stream links requesting a log-in. |
Damn four day old posts! Cluttering the forum!
The streams are requesting log-ins for one of two reasons. Jeric's changed a setting.... or.... they're jacked up.
These days they're mostly jacked.... mmmm... jacked.
A possible temporary fix has been found that we're going to try. Jeric's been hassling the programmer of the SAM2 and has been told from the man himself that the patch should be available within "5 days" of today. |

I'll be posting another update within the next couple days to let all you ripe bastards know what's been going on.
Until then. A couple of you wanted a reprint of this post I made to the guys over at SpacialAudio, the creators of SAM2 (which is what has been crashing the stream).
Anyways, Jeric has been back and forth with them over what the problem is, and they kept using WindowsXP as their scape goat.
So Jeric finally downgraded to Windows2000 and we're still having the same problems.
This was my follow up to Jeric's complaint:
(Note: "Clickbutt" is the head programmer of SAM2)
-------------------------------------------------
You ever notice how whenever you tell a programmer that you're having a software problem, the first thing they say is, "What OS are you using?"
Also notice how they never suggest the OS themselves?
That's because no matter what OS you tell them, they're going to say, "OH! Well that's your problem right there!"
They do this because they know 9 times out of 10 you're going to say, "Well heck I'm not changing my OS. I guess I'll just live with knowing the problem is my stinko OS and me!"
When programmers ask me what OS I use, I always say 98. That way, when they say, "Oh, well that's your problem. You should be using XP Pro." I can say, "HA! I lied! Nice try yeh doofus! I'm already using XP Pro. Now fix your software!"
Not to pick on you Clickbutt, but please, rerelease RC2 until the stability issues seen since RC2c have finally been fixed. |

First I would like to thank Jeric for working his a** off th keep this site and the stream going.
Thank you Jeric.
Next, I would like to say something to Cocles.
Don't ever loose your funky vibe. I love your style of answering peoples' questions.
Finally, to the reason that I posted here today.
When is the Ogg Vorbis stream going to go up?
Thank you all for reading this post. |

Thanks for recognizing all our hard work and letting us know. Don't forget to thank Sensei too for vastly improving the request system and making the best chat in the world!
We are not sure about ogg yet. We're still waiting for Leo to get in contact with us again. It's not the highest priority right now. Most people are satisfied with mp3PRO. But we haven't closed ogg as an option. _________________ "Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?." -Maximus

Noooooo.....
Bring Ogg to SST! Make a 32k, 64k mp3PRO stream and a 32k, 64k Ogg stream. My guess is w/in a month everyone will be using the Ogg stream. |
