Morricone Concert, Playlist Update, Live365, STM & Thanks

Internet Film Music Fans Traveling From Overseas To Attend Morricone Concert At Radio City Music Hall

NEW YORK CITY — A group of about 30 die-hard film music fans will be traveling from as far away as Norway and Sweden to attend film composer Ennio Morricone's first-ever US concert at Radio City Music Hall on Saturday. Others will be flying in from Canada, Oregon, Minnesota, Chicago and northern New England to attend the concert and gathering. They are all members of an online community based at StreamingSoundtracks.com, or SST for short — a live, streaming Internet radio station devoted to film music. Most have never met in person, though they have known each other for years online.

The two SST members traveling farthest from overseas are Petter Solås and Glenn Thomas Hvidsten, both from Norway. “The highlight of the trip will definitely be to experience Ennio,” Solås said. “Meeting so many members of the SST community and the whole thing taking place in NYC is just a big bonus, which is why we are spending a whole week there.”

For Hvidsten, the chance to hear Morricone in a live concert was strongly appealing, but it was the chance to meet so many of his online friends face-to-face that finally convinced him to make the trip. “After all, [Morricone] is one of the greatest film music composers there is, with an incredible track record. When word of this concert spread to the community over at StreamingSoundtracks.com (SST), everybody jumped out of their seats and purchased tickets. Suddenly everybody I knew, and then some, from SST was going, and the temptation for me to go grew beyond its limits, and I decided to go as well. To experience Morricone's music performed live on stage, with the Maestro himself conducting, together with the greatest online film music community was suddenly a reality. I had to live off bread and cold water for a couple of months to afford the flight and hotel, but I will get a visual and auditory refund like I will never get again, which makes it all worthwhile... and then some,” Hvidsten explained.

SST founder Eric Thornton is looking forward to the event, too. “I'm really excited about it — really looking forward to meeting all the people, all the personalities I've known from the web site. We’re meeting for dinner before the concert and for drinks afterwards. It's going to be fun matching faces with the people I've gotten to know,” he said. Asked whether he thought this event was important milestone for SST, Thornton said, “Yes, I do. I think this event will be important to the future of SST. It makes everything more real. Even though we've been doing this for five and a half years, it feels like this is the beginning of a whole new phase in the community's growth. It seems like it will make the community larger, but at the same time even closer together.”

SST was founded in August 2001. At the time it went live, the station had fewer than 50 albums in its library. Now there are over 2600 albums in the library — very many donated by devoted SST members.

Thornton started the station on his own personal PC connected to the Internet over a dial-up connection; only three listeners could connect to the stream simultaneously. The station is now co-located on two dedicated servers at a data center in Ashburn, Virginia and averages over 500 simultaneous listeners during the peak daytime period, with the number occasionally rising to over 750 — making it by far the dominant Internet film music radio station.

SST focuses primarily on film and television scores, but also offers video game and anime music. Listeners themselves program the station's playlist and can also chat with one another in the station's chat room.

Farewell Live365?
We will be most likely discontinuing service with Live365 as soon as February 25th, 2007.  Unfortunately Live365 has made it unaffordable to be a successful Live/Relay broadcaster on their network.  We will keep you informed and hopefully have a definite decision for the next update.

Soundtrack Of The Month
January: Holiday, The - Hans Zimmer
February: Partition - Brian Tyler

Thanks
Thanks to *1 Varese Sarabande, *2 CineMedia Promotions, *3 BhelPuri, and *4 Warner Bros. Records for sending these soundtracks in!
