EPICON
By: LOTRKing
Date: 29 May 2007
Rating:
EPICON is a beautiful blend of orchestral style music with modern rock music. This unusual, but amazing combination of styles gives the album its distinct sound. The album opens with the track Preliator (my favorite track on this album) with a sound reminiscent of the classic “O Fortuna.” The track then progresses to a battle drum followed by a female soloist singing in Latin. She is then joined by the choir that opened the track, and the track culminates in an EPIC duet between the two. The album moves on to Mighty Rivers Run, a calming piece featuring once again a female soloist and a background choir, however the words are in English this time. Prelude (On Earth as in Heaven) brings the album to its first real rock-sounding piece as the first male soloist and an accompanying choir sing about a man’s undying love for his dead wife. EPICON continues to Spiritus Khayyam which begins in an Indian or Middle-Eastern language (I can’t tell which) and then brings back the EPIC sound that was heard in Preliator. The album then mellows out with a calming Spanish track “La Coronacíon.” The next track, Europa, is another one of my favorites, and is the most rock-sounding track on the album. Diem Ex Dei has a similar sound to Preliator, though with not quite as much choir. Orchard of Mines returns to the distinct EPIC rock sound of the album and is similar to (but better than) Prelude. Crusaders of the Light makes me think “this is what Chariots of Fire would sound like if it were EPIC.” Madre Terra is another beautiful Spanish track and has a sound similar to Josh Groban’s music. Illumination is a “mehh” track that sounds like Mighty Rivers Run, but is not nearly as good. Take Me Away is the final rock sounding track on the album, but will satisfy rock fans just as much as all the other rock-tracks. Sarabande Suite (Aeternae) is the longest track on this album, but easily one of the most beautiful. It begins with a light choir and some beautiful piano music, but quickly progresses to the EPIC sound that was heard in Preliator. This track is always a good request, except when the queue is long. The final track, Porque Te Vas is the most disappointing track on the album; not only does it sound completely unlike anything else on the album with its slow vocal-guitar duet, but it ends the album with a sound completely opposite of how it began. In my opinion, it would have been better to end EPICON with Sarabande Suite. Still, this is a wonderful album as a whole, and has quickly become one of my all-time favorite CDs. I look forward to what Globus will offer us in the future.
