Fun Disney Film With An Equally Fun Scoring
By: jadedtitan
Date: 18 Nov 2009
Rating:
The film Meet the Robinsons was a cute, touching story of lesser Disney fame. Danny Elfman truly can score about any genre of film, his last big Disney hit was The Nightmare Before Christmas and although this score is not at notable as that, it is still a wonderful score by him that brings out the fun and excitement of our possible future.

The score music begins with the track Prologue, a soft gentle playing out of what will become the main theme through the score. Strings and winds carry the melody with the background orchestra adding fullness to the track. To the Future! is the best track I think on the album, it is fun upbeat and encouraging track you could say. “The future has arrived” is sung out by a chorus in the background, with strings carrying the upbeat feeling. Electronic sounds also infuse the track giving it a futuristic feeling.

The Science Fair is another fun track. Wind and brass instruments dominate, giving it a hurried rushed feeling. A fun chorus also adds to the track leading up to the finished moment at the end. Meeting the Robinsons is a slow meandering feeling song. Strings carry the melody throughout the track, going back to the opening theme at different stages. Goob’s Story is a more sad feeling track, showing the emotion of this character. The chorus adds to the track which plays the main theme in a minor key, giving it that sad downcast feel.

A Family United plays out the main theme on the flute, giving it that happy feel again. It is repeated till it builds at the end giving a feeling of a happy finality. Pop Quiz goes back to the style of the Science Fair track. The chorals giving a light feel to the track, repeating To the Future’s theme and adding that futuristic feel again with a jazzy mood brought through by the drum and brass instruments. It is a montage track, so you feel the passage of time as the track progresses to its crescendo ending.

The Evil Plan starts like Goob’s track, with the minor key theme, giving it that sinister feel. The track evolves out of that theme, adding menacing vocals to the background and ending with a minor note. Doris Has Her Day starts out with the main theme in a happy way, but the song quickly turns to a menacing styled track. This point in the movie, the epitome of the evil plan, the music does well to show the destruction caused. The main theme finds places to interject as hope in the track, in both its major and minor forms. The last track Setting Things Right concludes the musical story, giving an end to Doris. The music plays out the main theme in its variations, adding more variations with the strings. The song ends on a grand note “Keep Moving Forward” the motto of Cornelius Robinson, and a sentiment expressed by Walt Disney himself about his animation and his dreams.

While there is not much score music included on this CD, it is still a good example of Elfman’s work. I like all his variations and I think this music, though not grand or beyond other works, still has its place as a good listen. The movie I love and the music fits it perfectly.
