A superb musical, adequately sung

I’m a big fan of the Broadway musical upon which this movie was based. It’s a Sondheim musical that’s really more of an opera, in terms of its gory revenge story and the sheer amount of music. At first, I didn’t think I’d like the movie, since so much had been cut. It turns out I was wrong, and I think the film is a fine adaptation indeed.

That said, I do not really care for the soundtrack. Raised as I was on Broadway, I often find movie soundtracks, with their different performing standards, to be dim imitations of Broadway recordings. It’s not even the fault of the singers. Plenty of people have picked on the singing of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter in this movie. I agree; they’d never survive on Broadway. But this is a movie. These two perform wonderfully on screen. The vocals on their own, in soundtrack form, sound weak to me.

The “Opening Titles” are a karaoke version of “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd,” the connective tissue that holds the scenes in the show together. This is a function it still performs in the movie, just without vocals. Some great songs follow, like “Green Finch and Linnet Bird,” “Johanna,” and “Pretty Women.” These are Sondheim at his more romantic. He’s also known for his brilliant lyrics and complicated musical ideas. The first can be heard of “A Little Priest,” which is a favorite for good reason. “The Worst Pies in London” and “Poor Thing” show off his virtuoso composing.

I like the movie a lot. I can’t get behind the soundtrack 100%, because the weak singing is a distraction to me.

Request: “Opening Titles” “A Little Priest” “Johanna 2” (Track 16)
Avoid: “Alms, Alms” is mostly dialogue and plot. “Epiphany” It’s where Depp is, vocally, most out of his league, and I cringe every time, because it's such a powerful song.
