Jeff Beal - Carnivale

| Great emotive soundtrack for a short lived show |

Although Carnivàle only lasted two seasons on HBO, the music composed for the show by Jeff Beal contains very emotive violin and piano pieces along with dark brooding and suspensful tunes as well. The soundtrack can almost be split between those songs of the Carnivàle story line and those of Justin's story line. The show takes place during the Great Depression in the Dust Bowl region of the US so the Carnivàle pieces show that American western twang guitar style and convey lots of emotions through the violin and pianos used.
Tracks 4, 5, 10, 12, 13, 18, 20 and 25 are the darker songs associated with Justin and Management. These contain the trumpet tune found in Justin's Theme and are more dissonant in sound, adding more to the atmosphere of a scene than providing a song that can stand on its own.
The rest of the tracks are emotive, slow and contain many sad tracks, but these are the tunes associated with the Carnivàle and most are excellent violin and piano pieces that can stand on their own. The tracks most often have a violin leading, with piano or guitar adding to the tune.
The entire soundtrack is very emotive and touching, the story is not a pleasant one, but the music does a great job to convey that emotion and it is a shame that the story was never resolved.

#11 Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra with beautiful soprano, flute and oboe (a bit sad tune).

BT - Monster

I first heard this soundtrack and became aware of BT here at SST. I was immediately struck by the sadness and was haunted by the melody. I became curious about the movie and watched it. My heart went out to the protagonist in spite of the horrific things she had done and was sad when she received the ultimate final judgment and punishment - her life. I regress...the soundtrack conveys all of the emotions of this woman and her struggle to live her life the best way that she new how after enduring many unfair cruelties of the world.
My all time favorites are "Ferris Wheel" and "Bus Stop". "Girl Kiss (Hooking I)" is good too and the thematic melody can be heard throughout these tracks. Whether one cares for BT's style or not, in my opinion this is an excellent soundtrack.

Let's face it. The fact is that we owe a lot to composers like Max Steiner. Just look at the titles of these tracks and you will see how clear it is. This is a perfect way to get familiar with his work - making selections from here but don't stop there. Every lover of filmscore MUST HAVE this collection. It is essential history!!

Brian Tyler - Eagle Eye

This soundtrack takes the best of every action movie and puts it in one soundtrack!
There is the rhythm of Jason Bourne but Brian Tyler hits cues and feelings of other composers styles. Here are the similarities to composers below:
Like Track 1: Eagle Eye- Sounds like Steve Jablonsky's Transformers with the rhythm of John Powell.
Track 2: Eagle Eye Main Title- Rhythm of John Powell and melody of James Newton Howard along with I, Robot by Marco Beltrami and Brad Fidel.
Track 3: Final Manipulations- Sounds like a mixture of John Powell's Jason Bourne stuff and James Newton Howard.
Track 4: Escape- Sounds like a mixture of John Williams, Don Davis and James Horner.
Track 5: Honor- sounds like James Newton Howard I am Legend.
Track 6: Chutes- Mixture of John Powell and James Newton Howard styles.

John Harrison - Creepshow

I've always found this score by John Harrison really effective, and often iconic. Initially, Harrison was hired as the First Assistant Director on the film. Though soon, he became the project's composer, assigned to compose very brief themes and movements, which would segue between public domain tracks selected by Romero (as with Night of the Living Dead,) from the Capitol Music Library. But Harrison's music impressed everyone, and gradually, he found himself orchestrating more and more of the picture.
Being both the 1'st AD, as well as the film's composer, Harrison stated, "I had a feeling for what the movie was all about," and added, "I didn't need to glean from Romero in two weeks what was going on and then try to write something quick." Thus producing a score which is perfectly symbiotic with its host.
His work on the film began in direct connection with the film's Cinematographer. Choreographing his own bits of music with the public domain tracks, Harrison made abridgements. Romero quickly found that he preferred Harrison's own stuff and encouraged him to use more. And eventually, 75% of the film's score became Harrison; performed on a Prophet 5 synthesizer, and even utilizing a small choir for the opening track.
The holdouts being minor borrowed pieces used for sound effect, and "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill," which was in fact scored from the Capitol Music Library.
Terrific score. Especially for EC Comics fans.

Paul Haslinger - Death Race

| Gritty Rock Styled Sounds for a Gritty Movie |

Death Race is not the typical orchestra soundtrack. It is infused with an electric guitar that is heard throughout most of the songs and makes up the base of the soundtrack. It is a gritty guitar and rock styled soundtrack fitting to the gritty styled movie. Below is a break down of the tracks, with the quick racing songs mixed in with the slower songs that tell the story of Frank.
1. Voice over for first part of the song then a slow hard guitar playing the main theme.
2. More upbeat, rock styled song, hard guitars and loud drums.
3. Main theme played by the signature electric guitar, harsh gritty sound present in the entire album.
4. Quick and slow electric synth piece.
5. Guitar dominated, starts with mellow entrance music then the harsh guitar comes back.
6. More techno in style, but also slow and meandering.
7. Upbeat, guitar dominated, adrenaline fueled rock song.
8. Plays the main guitar theme again similar to track 3 with added synth
9. A quick voice over track.
10. Upbeat rock styled song, different variation than before.
11. Upbeat again, more similar to the main theme, song of desperation.
12. Slow suspenseful song to start then turns into another rock tune variation.
13. Quick voice, then a fast paced racing tune with more synthetic music.
14. Short track similar in sound to 13, more techno sounding.
15. Upbeat race track, guitar dominated, different themes but still in the rock style.
16. Quick voice of Jason (Frank), fast synth track back to the more techno style.
17. The guitar comes back for a quick few notes.
18. Slow synth track.
19. Jason (Frank) voice over at beginning, wrapping up the movie story, with the main theme guitar behind it then a nice gritty variation of the main theme.
All in all a great soundtrack, but not appealing to everyone's movie sound tastes. Paul Haslinger pulls another great score making a great complement to the racing movie.

This is the music from a very famous and great Swedish movie.
It got lots of good reviews over here, but has also started to tour around the world, where it has reached great success, especially in Australia, I think.
Among the music there are two gorgeous piano tracks:
"Gabriella's Piano" and "Lena's Piano".
On the CD there are some music with lyrics (sadly they aren't on SST) called "Gabriella's Song" (sung in Swedish) and "Come Fly With Me" (sung in English) both with beautiful lyrics. "Gabriella's Song" is sung in the movie and also as end title. Normally the audience walks away when text starts to roll, but in this movie they ALL stay put just to hear that song, so it's too bad it's not added. It still gets played a lot in Sweden, and the singer who also is the actress in the movie (Helen Sjöholm) has worked a lot with Benny Andersson (ABBA) and is a great famous singer in Sweden.
Anyway, listen to the piano tracks. I'm sure you will like them a lot! :)

When I watched this movie I loved the music! It's such a nice melody that appears in many of the tracks. You can see on the numbers of requests which tracks are most popular. Those are the best ones also, though don't be afraid to try one of the others out.. they are all good!
First track is sung by a Swedish singer called Laleh. She makes normally her own music and can be found online to buy I think. If you are interested, send me a PM and I will be glad to help.
As for the movie.. it comes in two parts and the second part is just released at cinemas in Sweden atm (oct 2008). I have been informed they will release ONE international movie soon. So if you like I think it will be possible to go see it or at least buy the DVD early next year. They speak Swedish, English and Arabic in the movie, so you would have to wait for the international version if you feel you need some English subs.
Movie is about a Knight Templar and some love story included, played at the 1300 century in Sweden and Israel. Arn, the son of a high-ranking Swedish nobleman is educated in a monastery and sent to the Holy Land as a knight templar to do penance for a forbidden love.
