Cripes, and I thought *I* had issues with anger.
You make a lot of good points. And I agree with you that most, if not all composers, have their own style which you will hear throughout their works. I'm ok with that aspect. It is when a composer takes work that was used on one movie and uses it for another that lessens the worth for me I suppose. And yes, John Williams was brought up because a previous post mentioned that his work was repetative. I just happened to agree with that statement and added that it was similar to "Star Wars".
I feel a lot stronger on this issue with James Horner however. He is the one that I feel is more guilty of "stealing" his own works to use in multiple soundtracks. It's not like a pattern of notes was reused, or a similar theme ... but in some cases the whole track within the score is 90% the same. And it wasn't until this thread that I was reminded that the composers do this for money, and it could have been requested of them to reuse their material.
So if I'm a snob for explaining why I don't like a particular composer over another then so be it. At least I attempt to explain my opinions, and listen to what others have to say about the matter. |

*sigh* I think the problem here, circle, is that you're kind of contradicting yourself. In your original post you said:
Quote: |
And John Williams used to be big for me. Until I realized that every one of his soundtracks sounds like Star Wars. |
..but, in trying to defend your viewpoint, you're now saying:
Quote: |
And yes, John Williams was brought up because a previous post mentioned that his work was repetative. I just happened to agree with that statement and added that it was similar to "Star Wars".
|
Rather than digging yourself into a bigger hole it might be better just to say - OK, point taken.
By the way, cocles...

...Amen to that. |

My original statement that you quoted was actually in reference to the 2nd post in this thread:
Wolf wrote: |
Williams comes in close second but is loosing with each score I hear from him... Getting too repetitive. |
I hastily added "They *ALL* sound like Star Wars". That was obviously my mistake, and I took the newbie comment from JERIC too personally without realizing what I had written. So yes, saying *ALL* of his soundtracks sound like Star Wars was a big No-No.
I then mentioned another composer who is guilty of ripping off his own music, and as I looked back in the thread, I see I'm not the only one:
Hurr78 wrote: |
... and James Horner when he's not busy copying his own themes |
I wasn't really trying to single out John Williams, I just got stuck in a rut when I took offense to the first post.
Alrighty, with that said ... thank you.
Point Taken.

Hmmm... brand new original avatar.
More humble in nature.
Might just make an asset out of him yet. |

I am going for the "Other" and putting out Joe Hisaishi as my favorite composer. I might be biased because he does all the music for some of my favorite movies. Oh well. |

Good shout, tree, Hisaishi is one of those composers I've only really come across since listening to this brilliant website. I love Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service.
In fact there's a whole batch of soundtrack stars that I have only discovered since being here. All that music I might have missed.... |

I voted John Williams, because, well, he still writes the most beautiful themes that perfectly catch the necessary emotions ...
Second in line would at this moment be Howard Shore, his LOTR scores are awesome !! I recently met him at a concert ( where they played the symphony) and he is a really nice and modest man.
I'm also a great admirer of Thomas Newman (very modest - mmm I seem to use that word a lot - music), Trevor Jones (Merlin !!), and yes ... Hans Zimmer, (a couple of years ago, he gave a concert in Belgium which I attended ;I met him in a recordstore where he signed CD's with Lebo M and Lisa Gerrard)and Klaus Badelt (POTC is fun to listen to) _________________ Tiro! I voted for Howard Shore becaust LOTR is my favorite soundtrack. John Williams is a very very very close second. |

I really like Wojciech Kilar with Basil Poledouris coming in second, if I had to choose (which I guess is what I'm doing ) _________________ We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. I have many favorites (in order); Henry Mancini, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Michael Kamen, James Horner to name a few... SST is certainly turning me on to many more! _________________ "It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him." ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
