Warner Bros. hired a bunch of people who all thought the Batman mythos was a big joke.

"What? Batman? You mean like Adam West? Heh, that stuff's for kids!"

So they made two big campy films (the fourth, much worse than the third) that had no respect for the material, then wondered why no one liked it.

I'm curious: as I recall, Tim Burton stayed on as a producer on the third Batman movie... but wasn't involved at all in the fourth. Was he kind of forced out of the franchise by the "genius" executives at Warner Bros? Or did he just get so pissed off at the way everyone was treating the franchise that he left by his own choice?

What you saw in the 1989 Batman was Burton on a short leash, with the executives watching everything VERY carefull.

In Batman Returns Burton was pretty much given free reign, which resulted in the film being a little more... "goofy". The second one just lacks the balls that the first one had. Heck listen to Elfman's title tracks for each on and you can tell there's some oomph missing in the second. The primary (only?) reason to watch Batman Returns is for Michelle Pfeiffer's awesome performance as Catwoman.

Burton had a roll in the third one sure, but for all we know, that just meant he got to put in his input here and there. And heck it was good for marketing. What you saw in Batman 3 was Joel Schumacher on a short leash (and you still got nipples on the batsuit).

In the fourth one you saw Schumacher being given free reign, and thus you had the disaster.

I don't think Burton was edged out. I think he just wanted to do something else.

Personally, I think Burton has been given too much credit as the "Grand Master" of the Batman franchise. The first Batman film is devoid of Burton's quirkyness and that's one of the reasons why "Batman" is so much better than "Batman Returns". "Batman" was not good because of Burton but because of everyone involved making a lot of good decisions.

(Burton is also credited with giving Batman it's "dark feel". This is untrue. Burton took the idea from Frank Miller. The person who made Batman what he is today with the story "Dark Knight Returns". Should I also mention that the director of the newest Batman film taken MANY meetings with Frank Miller and even had him help develop the script?)

Anyways, this time around it seems WB has created a hybrid. They're giving free reign, but they have been VERY careful with who they to finally given those reigns too. And so far it's looking to be the right way to go. Let's hope Nolan pulls it off. Wink
