Actually, I disagree with that. The nice thing about a movie as a date is that it's a shared experience with the other person. It gives you a topic to discuss (over coffee after the film, say) that you will both have as a common point of reference. Once the ball is rolling (and assuming that your opinion on the film isn't diametrically opposite to the other person's), you'll be able to talk about other things.
I do agree with you about the dinner thing, though  |

Ok not that I date much but when I invite people over for dinner the first time I go thru a lot of trouble to make an over the top impression. For example if I'm making creme brule rather than use one of those wimpy hand held kitchen torches I use a standard size propane tank. And if you're doing something like bananas foster throwing cinamon across the flame causes and excellent sparkle effect.

When company comes over I make sure their pop-tart goes in the good toaster, and it comes from a fresh box. Nothing but the best for my guests...

By the way, Juan, I agree that you have a point about the movie being a good jumping-off point for a discussion. But keep in mind that a really bad or overly bizarre movie can just kill the mood completely, too. |

True. But even a bad movie can be a good conversation starter, it's the shared nature of the moviegoing experience that makes it effective as a first date. In any event, I think most people would choose a fairly populist film for a first date. You're probably not going to see Fahrenheit 9/11 as a first date (unless you know your political beliefs are very similar) as you'd run the risk of the post-movie coffee being like an episode of Crossfire |
