Well obviously tolkien, i have just ordered the first four of DNA's Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I like Tom Clancy, John Grisham, more of the earlier ones. Grisham's about the only "easy read" i like.
Gone with the Wind was a favorite. Haven't read it in a while, guess that's an easy read, but i read it the first time at 10.
I love children's lit - like maurice sendak, chris van allsburg, etc. _________________ 'He looked at her, and being a man whom pity deeply stirred, it seemed to him that her loveliness amid her grief would pierce his heart.' —Faramir's thoughts on Éowyn |

yes the firm, but my fave is A Time to Kill, his first. I like all of them, but for awhile when he was cranking out one a year they kind of were a little easier read. _________________ 'He looked at her, and being a man whom pity deeply stirred, it seemed to him that her loveliness amid her grief would pierce his heart.' —Faramir's thoughts on Éowyn |

Some more old school: Everything by Stanislaw Lem. You should definitely check out Solaris if you haven't already read it. Way better than the Soderbergh movie from 2002 btw. Solyaris (1972) by Andrei Tarkovsky is great though.
And some new school: "Otherland" by Tad Williams, mixing cyberpunk and fantasy. The new Tolkien IMO.

I personally love Sartre, Alexandre Jardin, Boris Cyrulnik, Maupassant because what they write is very witty, Daniel Pennac because his books are very funny and I love his casual writing, Bernard Werber for his scientific knowledge ... Sorry if most of them are French...
I read Dan Simmon's Hollow Man. It was just great. I tried to read other books from him but it's too gory... _________________ Always wondered what a French photo album could look like?

if you want to continue reading Dan Simmons, you have to read "Carrion Comfort"...(in french: "l'échiquier du mal" )...
http://www.chez.com/dyulun/Selene/littfiches/echiquier.html
It's an amazing story, more fantastic than sf,with ideas i've never read before...
it would be a great movie...You HAVE to read it!
(i love Werber,Maupassant and Pennac!) |

Actually, I remember now that I wanted to read this one (thanks for reminding me). If you liked Carrion Comfort, try "Si j'etais vous" ("If I were you") by Julien Green. It was a really great book. You can find it as a "Livre de Poche" in France.
Julien Green was born in France from American parents and studied in Paris and at University of Virginia (just as I did... maybe I am his reincarnation ). To learn more,

Speaking of french (and suisse) literature, I love Sartre, de Beauvoir, Flaubert, Maupassant, Camus, Proust and Ramuz. I hate to love Houellebecq. Yeah, I know these are the "classics" - I would appreciate if you could point me to some lesser known (contemporary) french writers. |
