|
I've just listened to this soundtrack a couple of times now, and decided to give you my view in case you are interrested:
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is very Danny Elfman. The songs are weird, but not up to Forbidden Zone weirdness. The song from the trailer is a good example. There are a couple of powerful tracks that have a nice theme. There are also a couple of emotional and "mystery" themes, but the ones in one of his better works; "Edward Scissorhands", are better.
All in all a traditional Elfman score with a rating of 4 stars out of 6. _________________ "Anything one man can imagine,

Chandler, thanks for your review- seems spot on, although I still need to pick up a copy. I saw the film today and the opening theme reminded me of Batman and Forbidden Zone crossed together. I agree that the songs were weird and rather grating, with 70's rock guitar and 60's Beatle-like harmonies. It made me nostalgic for the Oompa Loompas' singing in the original. Moments of Edward Scissorhands-like sweetness accompanying scenes of Charlie and his family redeem the score. |

After listening to this soundtrack for a while, I've actually started to like it quite a bit, yet I stand by my previous review.
What I've been looking for lately is the lyrics to the songs, and now I've found them. To make it easier for the rest of you to find them, I'll type them in here, for you convinience
(They can all be found on the official site)
WONKA'S WELCOME SONG
Willy Wonka, Willy Wonka... the amazing chocolatier.
Willy Wonka, Willy Wonka... everybody give a cheer!
He's modest, clever, and so smart, he barely can restrain it.
With so much generosity, there is no way to contain it...
To contain it... to contain... to contain... to contain.
Willy Wonka, Willy Wonka... he's the one that you're about to meet.
Willy Wonka, Willy Wonka... he's a genious who just can't be beat.
The magician and the chocolate wiz...
He's the best darn guy who ever lived.
Willy Wonka here he is...
AUGUSTUS GLOOP
Augustus Gloop, Augustus Gloop, the great big greedy nincompoop.
Augustus Gloop, so big and vile. So greedy, foul and infantile.
Come on we cried, the time is ripe, to send him shooting up the pipe.
But don't dear children be alarmed.
Augustus Gloop will not be harmed; Augustus Gloop will not be harmed.
Although of course we must admin, he will be altered quite a bit.
Slowly wheels go round and round, and cogs begin to grind and pound.
We'll boil him for a minute more, until we're absolutely sure.
Then out he comes, by God, by Grace.
A miracle has taken place, a miracle has taken place.
This greedy brute, this louse's ear
Is loved by people everywhere.
For who could hate or bear a grudge
Against a luscious bit of FUDGE!!!
VIOLET BEAUREGARDE
Listen close, and listen hard, the tale of Violet Beauregarde.
This dreadful girl she sees no wrong...
Chewing, chewing, chewing, chewing, chewing, chewing all day long.
Chewing, chewing all day long.
Chewing, chewing all day long.
Chewing, chewing all day long.
She goes and chewing till at last, her chewing muscles grow so fast.
And from her face her giant chin, sticks out just like a violin...
--- Chorus ---
For years and years she chews away, her jaws get
stronger every day.
And with one great tremendous chew...
they bite the poor girl's tongue in two.
And that is why we try so hard, to save
Miss Violet Beauregarde.
--- Chorus ---
VERUCA SALT
Veruca Salt, the little brute, has just gone down the garbage chute.
And she will meet as she descends, a rather different set of friends.
... a rather different set of friends... a rather different set of friends.
A fish head for example cut, this morning from a halibut.
An oyster from an oyster stew, a steak that no one else would chew.
And lots of other things as well, each with its rather horrid smell.
These are Veruca's new found friends that she will meet as she descends.
These are Veruca's new found friends...
Who went and spoiled her, who indeed?
Who pandered to her every need?
Who turned her into such a brat?
Who are the culprits, who did that?
The guilty ones, now this is sad.
Are dear old mum, and loving dad.
MIKE TEAVEE
The most important thing, that we've ever learned.
The most important thing we've learned as far as children are concerned.
Is never, never let them near, a television set.
Or better still just don't install the idiotic thing at all.
(Never, never let them... never, never let them)
It rots the senses in the head. It kills imagination dead.
It clogs and clutters up the mind. It makes a child so dull and blind.
(So dull, and blind... so dull, and blind)
You can no longer understand a fairytale in fairyland.
(A fairyland... A fairyland)
His brain becomes as soft as cheese,
his thinking powers rust and freeze.
He cannot think, he only SEES!...
Regarding little Mike Teavee,
we very much regret that we (Regret that we)
Shall simply have to wait and see...
We very much regret that we
Shall simply have to wait and see
if we can get him back to size.
But if we can't... It serves him right! _________________ "Anything one man can imagine,

Hearing the main titles for the first time was enough to convince me to buy the album. It seems that the more I listen to this soundtrack, the more I like it.
On the other hand, I don't think it would appeal to everyone. Recommended for Elfman fans only. _________________ "You have been chosen to represent Earth in Mortal Kombat. Be warned. I agree with you, Johnny. Moreover, I started to like the soundtrack after seeing the movie: before that, I didn't really enjoy it. Definitely not easy listening _________________ "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe" - Blade Runner |
