|
My vote for the most overlooked composers by the Academy are:
JAMES NEWTON HOWARD
JOHN DEBNEY
ALAN SILVESTRI
DANNY ELFMAN
But the MOST overlooked composer in recent memory has to be:
JERRY GOLDSMITH - 18 nominations and only one win: THE OMEN
Sad. So sad now that he's gone. |

I should've added DAvid Newman but he hasn't done Oscar quality work lately because of the lack of good projects.

Poor Jerry He is greatly missed. It's hard to imagine such great soundtracks like Mulan, Medicine Man, 13th Warrior, and The Mummy, not getting chosen.
At least he's won in our hearts!
I agree that Jerry deserves every nomination, but second on my list would be Mr. Elfman. I love his music. One of my favorite Elfman queue's is from Sleepy Hollow. Listen to the opening sequence and the music starts out so slowly, but grows into an awesome, powerful & scary ending. I always smile when I watch Sleepy Hollow, because during that sequence it shows "Music By Danny Elfman" just at the peak of the intense music. _________________ "Diaper backward spells repaid. Those are all great choices, but I think Joe Hisasihi is the most overlooked. I doin't think he has ever even been nominated!
If he doesn't do music in Hollywood he will never win. _________________ Pixie "Actually Tree, I wasn't referring to you as a dingus, but seems like you might just qualify as one now!" |

Well, pretty much everybody acknowledges Jerry G as one of the 20th Century's best and most prolific film composers, so it doesn't really matter that he didn't win too many oscars. Who even really remembers which people won the oscar even a few months after the ceremony, anyhow?
But Alan Silvestri really is an underrated composer. I agree, he really should get more respect. |

How about Ennio Morricone? He hasn't won an Oscar yet. |

Wow... Zirael, good call. I always thought that he had won at least once... but I looked it up and you're absolutely right. I'm really surprised that he didn't even get nominated for Cinema Paradiso. |

ENNIO MORRICONE HASN'T WON YET?! That's terrible. Another A-list composer who hasn't won . . .
P.S. I love his western scores!
P.P.S. The Academy needs to get its act together! |

The Internet Movie Database, Mellow. There's an option under every person's file called "awards." Click on that and you'll get a list of every major award the person has received or been nominated for. |

What a travesty it is that he didn't win in 1986 with The Mission. What has more staying power, The Mission or 'Round midnight by Herbie Hancock?

The Untouchables by Morricone the following year was great too, but I think The Mission is one of the most beautiful of all time. But Hurr is right, who really remembers after a while? It is an interesting topic though.
I would be curious to know what score Hisaishi should have been nominated/won for. |

Do you really think the academy cares for real art or musical matters?
Come on, since "Brokeback Mountain" won, it's really obvious they don't care about ORIGINAL music in any matter.
I mean, there are rarely 20 minutes of score, the rest consists of new arranged country songs. And that's what you get an Oscar for????
Probably one of the basic problems still is that certain composers or scores are too progressive, too "modern" so to say.
It doesn't matter how many times you've copied yourself or - even worse - somebody else.
The last years sadly have shown me that the judgement of many academy members can't be taken seriously.
(Or does really anybody think that e.g. "Shakespeare in Love" had sooooooo much innovativity?)
It's really a shame for every serious music lover that masters like Morricone, Goldsmith, etc. have been and still are being ignored.
Hopefully that'll change... someday |

For what? Let's say that I love soundtracks (which I do), let's say that I'm really not into Hisaishi (which I'm not), but, that I have an open mind (which I do) and am willing to be convinced. What one score should he have won for?
