Walton: Film Music is a collection of film scores from Sir William Walton, a British composer who (among other genres) worked with movie music from the 40s to the 60s. His music follows the Old School, with some distinctive touches that I like.
My favorite scores on this CD are mainly from the Henry V Suite:
"Prologue: The Globe" - A nice, stirring introduction to the film. Romantic and dramatic at the same time.
"The Death of Falstaff" - A sombre and gentle melody. Nice string highlights.
"Touch Her Soft Lips and Depart" - very romantic, elegant, and sweet.
"Agincourt Song" - a powerful medieval war hymn, accompanied with good strings and brass.
And a few more from other films:
"The Battle of Britain: Spitfire in the Air" - I believe that we already have this one in the playlist. A good trumpet/strings reflection of an aerial dogfight.
"A History of the English-Speaking People - March" - a solid, very old school march. Quite cheery and bright.

Terrific recommendation, ld80061.
Although we already have Walton's Battle Of Britain, it doesn't look like the tracks are absolutely identical. |

Waltons expressionistic style is very interesting,
3 years ago I took part in performing his cantata "Belshazar's Feast".
So bring it on!

I just wanted to let you all know that couple of Walton’s tracks from movies based on Shakespeare’s plays are currently en route to JERIC, as I sent him this compilation couple of days ago.
Compilation I’m talking about has 6 tracks by Walton (and two by Shostakovitch especially for bpe!  )
But I’m not sure if JERIC says “yes” for this contribution (it also has 10 dialogue tracks and 15 that are already at SST which leaves “only” 11 cues total - including 6 from Walton - for possible addition).
To tell you the truth, I even hesitated a bit before I sent it in. But in fact the Walton’s tracks were the ones that convinced me to make “send in” decision after all.
For all that, I think the fate of ld80061’s suggestion looks wide open.
And "Walton Film Music" is very good suggestion. At least one of CDs with his works should be here. And maybe ld80061’s idea is better than mine
BTW: We will know more after JERIC’s decision on my donation 
If he decides agains adding parts of "Shakespeare at the movies" compilation I will vote “yes” in this thread, for sure.

I listened to the clips, and I think the Walton Film music compilation will appeal to those who enjoy subtle, more classical interpretations. The Silva Shakespeare CD performances are more modern and romantic.
I'm happy with SST adding either or both CDs, but I'm leaning towards adding only the Silva Shakespeare CD just because I think more listeners will request it. |
