Okay, the new movie is coming out. I'm excited even though I don't think I'll like it very much. weaponlordzero and I were posting about Batman themes, so I decided to create a little poll. Check it out.

Mind you, I'm only talking about the theme the score uses for Batman, not the score itself. Remember that when picking a favorite. I've identified tracks where available in the SST library. For The Edge's theme, see here. For Sturmer, here.

I voted for Shirley Walker. That's the Batman I fell in love with, and the theme is perfect. Elfman comes a close second. I also like the Batman Beyond theme, but that's because I liked the show.

Of course, this may be premature, because I'm sure Batman: Gotham Knight will give us yet another theme. Please, dear Lord, let it be cool.

Danny Elfman really set the standard for me. His theme does a great job capturing Batman. Very dark and daring and at times explosive. Shirleys was good too however. The new Batman theme is more "realistic" you could say.

Elfman all the way for me, I remember how I got the chills hearing his Main Title for the 1st time. (Definetely his Orchestrator Steve Bartek earns much of the glory as well as he orchestrated it so good.)

Of course no one's going to beat the good old

I would have to say Elfman. If anyone really nailed what Batman is about, it was him.

Well said bpewien. Smile

I voted for Danny Elfman also. Like others has said, for me it captures batman's real personality. Dark and Heroic.

Here's an interview with Zimmer and Newton Howard about their new Batman score, in which much is made of how they hadn't written a "theme" the first time around, and don't really care to.
http://soundtrack.net/features/article/?id=256

I think the interview is much more entertaining if you read JNH's lines à la Nigel Tufnel in This is Spinal Tap. Something about what he says suggested this to me.

My favorite line is Zimmer, "I have a feeling that out there in the world, there are people waiting for James and me to "come to our senses" and stop this dark nonsense with the iconic two-note thing and write a happy jolly theme like the old Batman. You know, like the Danny Elfman one."

Only a German would think the Elfman theme was "jolly."

Very Happy True... although lurking in that weird head of Zimmer's is an element of truth. For all it's wonderful dark majesty and bombast, Elfman's theme also has a delightfully camp quality that reminds me of the 60's show as much as the all the best of Frank Miller's comics. It's a nicely balanced creation, that one.

I've never seen the animated Batman series before, so thank you for the links to the opening credits. As a result I went looking/listening for the others that were unfamiliar, and found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIWo7Iq9EZA montage as well. I was pleasantly surprised by the Edge's version. For me, it's a hard choice between Elfman, Goldenthal, the Edge, and Zimmer & Newton Howard. All of them have things to say about the mythos, and they all convey it well.

*On a toss of a coin* Today, Goldenthal gets my vote.

I listened to Mask of the Phantasm opening from your link Niall519 and I REALLY like it. Tough choice vs. Elfman original...

What did I tell you, wlz? The Walker theme rocks!

The Edge's is interesting. I always liked that intro. Had a "Dark Knight Returns" quality to the color palette.
