With the introduction of the new Ogg Vorbis streams I have noticed a number listeners, Newbies, Regulars, and Old Timers alike with a lot of questions.
Since the info on Ogg Vorbis is scattered and sometimes hard to make heads or tails of, I have created this thread so we can all (including myself) understand in layman's terms the new format many of us are quite fond of here at SST.

Why Ogg?
We've decided to use Ogg for two primary reasons:
Ogg sounds as good if not better than MP3pro when heard at the same bitrate.
And Ogg streams are one fifth the price. |

Will we get rid of MP3Pro?
No. MP3Pro provides an alternative... it's backwards compatible with MP3, and we've received a great deal of our listeners through shoutcast. |

How do I listen to Ogg?
Personally I recommend Winamp2, but you will need to download the "Standard" or "Full" installation file. The "Lite" installation file will not play ogg.
And note, Winamp3 does not play Ogg. Nor does it play MP3pro. Personally I don't see the point in this, but que sera.
You can find more info on players here: http://www.ogghelp.com/ogg/downloads.cfm |

Ogg Quality Levels...
Unlike MP3 which uses Bitrates, Ogg Vorbis used "Levels". The thought being that as the Ogg Vorbis technology improves, the bitrates will decline while the quality stays the same.
So while Oggv2 might be ~96kbps now, it could be ~72kbps a year from now and still sound the same.
It gets a bit more confusing though.
From what I have been able to surmise, while the Ogg Levels have the same names, the mean different things whether you're referring to an Ogg FILE or an Ogg STREAM. Here's what I've been able to find.
Ogg Files (VBR)
According to some literature on the Ogg website, Oggv3 is for everyday use, Oggv5 is CD Quality, and Oggv6 is for the perfectionists because it is the first level to not use Stereo coupling.
Oggv-1 = ~ 32kbps
Oggv0 = ~ 64kbps
Oggv1 = ~ 80kbps
Oggv2 = ~ 96kbps
Oggv3 = ~ 112kbps
Oggv4 = ~ 128kbps
Oggv5 = ~ 160kbps
Oggv6 = ~ 192kbps
Oggv7 = ~ 224kbps
Oggv8 = ~ 256kbps
Oggv9 = ~ 320kbps
Oggv10 = ~ 400kbps
Ogg Streams (VBR)
Note - Unlike the Ogg "Files" I have found no literature defining what each level is supposed to be equivalent to in terms of quality. For the purposes of SST, Jeric and I listened to samples of each and, at the time this was written, opted for Oggv7.
Oggv1 = quality -1 - mono - 22050khz 24-26kbps
Oggv2 = quality -1 - stereo - 22050khz 32-33kbps
Oggv3 = quality 0 - mono - 22050khz 33-34kbps
Oggv4 = quality -1 - mono - 44100khz 40-44kbps
Oggv5 = quality 0 - stereo - 22050khz 45-48kbp
Oggv6 = quality 0 - mono - 44100khz 47-54kbps
Oggv7 = quality -1 - stereo - 44100khz 56-64kbps
Oggv8 = quality 0 - stereo - 44100khz 68-72kbps
Oggv9 = quality 1 - stereo - 44100khz 78-84kbps
Oggv10 = quality 2 - stereo - 44100khz 98-100kbps
Oggv11 = quality 3 - stereo - 44100khz 117-123kbps
Oggv12 = quality 3.7 - stereo - 44100khz 126-135kbps
If any of you would like to add something, please feel free to chime in. At some point when I have more time (read: I'm bored) I'll add the khz and mono/stereo to the Ogg File definitions. |

Anyone know a good iTunes plugin to play Ogg streams in iTunes?
Works great in Audion, but I'd love to just use iTunes if possible.
Suggestions?
Thanks!! |
