Hey guys, have a friend trying to track down the composer to this piece.

The score for the series is Morricone, but that is clearly not who wrote the opening under the credits. All released scores for the show use a different theme from Morricone as the Main title, but clearly they aren't.

Any insights from anyone?

Well, like your friend likely already did, I googled it in search for the article. Most websites that sell the soundtrack for this only list Morricone. I agree with you that this doesn't sound like his (other) work.

Best other result I got was this webpage, that tells how Claudio Fuiano is also on the credits list for this one, as for many other of Morricone's tracks.
In the same review, the author also says this though:
Quote:
The theme you will be humming in the street is the main "Marco Polo" theme, which is quite sublimely beautiful even by Morricone standards. Based around one of the composer's heartbreaking viola solos, it is no exaggeration to call it one of Morricone's greatest creations.

That's the best I got for you. Good luck on your search!
